Ancient Lore During the marriage of Orlanth and Ernalda, the Doe men whooped and drank with Orlanth, making Orlanth our main deity. Our clan’s earliest famous event was when Pella, the pottery goddess, made the first pot to store grain in. During the Storm Age, we adopted strangers into our clan. Our worst enemies in those days were the trolls. We were originally a Peace Clan. At the Dawn, we first awakened Orlanth, the Father. Our attitude toward dragons and their ilk was negative; we did not like them nor believe their words. 1329 We made the dangerous trek to Dragon Pass, and claimed lots more land than we probably needed. We built a clan hall, some steads, and a temple to Orlanth. But when we left Heortland, we lost much of our connection with the gods. 1330 The god-talkers heard whispers in a strange language, but could not make out the meaning. We found fused lumps of iron in the hills nearby. A delegation from the Holy Country came to give us gifts and ask us to commit a treasure of theirs for safe-keeping. We asked if they served the Pharaoh. “The Pharaoh commands everyone who lives in the Holy Country,” they said. “But we’re not here for the Pharaoh. This is a matter of friendship between the Does and the Lead Breakers.” Fantarl took the other ring members aside and said, “I think they are not telling the truth.” We agreed to keep the treasure, which they called the Iron Spike. The pig-herder Lhankpent left his grave every night to demand food from his family. We held a ceremony at Lhankpent’s grave, imploring his revenant to join our honored ancestors in the afterlife and trouble his family no more. The grave grumbled, then fell silent. That night, Lhankpent remained in the earth, and his family ate dinner in peace for the first time in weeks. Outlaws attacked our exploration party in the northwest. Barntadus blustered and shouted at the outlaws, driving them off. While exploring our tula, we found traces of an ancient battle. We went to other clans and bragged about this find. Our neighbors were much impressed. Rangoron, a weaponthane of our clan, wished to marry Ostlana of the Lonisi clan. Ostlana’s clan demanded that Rangoron steal the famous magical plow of the Bayberries for them. We asked the girl’s ring to reconsider the terms of marriage. Ostlana’s mother was a member of the Lonisi ring, and they would not gainsay her. We allowed Rangoron to try to do so. Rangoron crept into the tula of the Bayberry clan late at night, but was discovered. They plunged their swords into his back and thighs, but still he escaped. When word of his failure reached Ostlana’s mother Veoslina, she prevented any further contact between Rangoron and her daughter. An outlaw woman brought us a baby she had raised in a shield. She told us that the babe, Kallyr, would one day be a mighty warrior. We did as the woman asked, and took the girl in. Kentvent came back from the mountains and told us that he had found the lair of a wyrm. We sent Intagarn to take the treasure without killing the wyrm. Intagarn found the wyrm to be quite intelligent, although not quite intelligent enough. Intagarn taught it how to gamble, and beat it handily at dice. 1331 The gods blessed our clan with extra magic this year. A huge troll named Umulguk warned us that having the Iron Spike meant we were enemies of the trolls. She said we should give her the Spike. In return for it, she offered a set of Lead Eyes, which would speed the spirits of our warriors when they died. We accepted the offer. Randalyar spoke for the warriors when he said that they were stretched too thin, and that more fighters were needed. We sent Kentvent on a mission to find the best warriors available. One of our exploration parties found gems in a cliff on our tula. We found an old series of sacred stones in a forest clearing on our tula. We went to other clans and bragged about this find. Our neighbors thought we were fools for bragging about a bunch of old rocks with no magic left in them. A new clan arrived and wanted to claim some of our land as their own. We offered to make them members of clan Doe. That day, they became one with clan Doe, and the Anmangarni were no more. A delegation of the clan’s leading women raised serious complaints against the job Kagradus was doing as chief. Kagradus’s clever oration reaffirmed his right to rule. Kentvent returned from his recruiting mission with 2 new weaponthanes. An exploratory mission came home early to report that one of them had been taken by Tusk Riders, and could now be presumed dead. Fantarl composed a poem to celebrate Thadart’s life and mourn his death. The people were much cheered by it. They said that other clans would now remember Thadart and his deeds. Olende, a hunter of the Karandoli clan, asked permission to hunt a great white stag on our land. We said we might consider his request if given gifts. He made a good offer, and we gave him the permission he sought. He caught the stag. It was a magnificent beast indeed, and everyone said that the hunters of clan Karandoli were the best hunters around. Explorers found the warrior Nallindia, who fled from the injustice of the Pharaoh, and said we should give her asylum. We adopted her as a weaponthane. She took her place in the chief’s household. The people were proud to see a foe of the Pharaoh honored in such a fashion. We saw a rainbow; the people were cheered by this good omen. With this blessing, we sought to build friendships. The chief and thanes of the Stag Hearth clan pledged their friendship to us. Our scouts found a strange clan of beast folk who were like ducks. Tempering mercy with shrewdness, we exacted payment from the ducks, whose larders were heavy. While exploring our tula, we turned up a cave with green-colored clay that we can use for making high-quality pottery. 1332 The omens were contradictory. Three great Orlanthi wind lords came to bring us the joy of Orlanth. They asked for help in a task they would not speak of. We gave them some of our clan magic. A man with the face of a Tusk Rider came to our tula and claimed to be Thadart. He said his disfigurement was a grim joke of the Tusk Riders’ god. Our clan leaders sought to convince the people that he should be allowed to return. Intagarn’s eloquent words persuaded them that this was indeed Thadart returned, and not some terrible monster. The people welcomed him back, and there was much rejoicing. We were able to attract 68 new cottars to the clan. They brought with them 108 children. Orlkarth, a trader of the Jenestni clan, offered us ten cows to perform trickster magic on a rival trader, Yaransor of the Vanstali clan. We accepted his offer. Our devotees of Eurmal performed the ritual of trickery. They said that the signs were not good; Yaransor was shielded by the protective magic of Issaries, the trading god, and our trickster magic could not confuse her. The carls warned the clan ring that there were too many people, and they could not produce enough food for everyone. We chose to seize land from the neighboring Turtle clan. We raided the Turtles and eluded their patrols. The land spirits of the Turtle tula were so hostile to our warriors that we decided to withdraw. Nallindia distinguished herself in the fighting. We beat them, but they were determined foes and refused to leave their land. Oranda, a trader from the Lonisi, offered us 10 cows worth of goods every year in exchange for trading our green clay only with them. We talked them into taking two wagonloads of clay for 20 cattle. We were able to attract 1 new carls to the clan. They brought with them 5 children. Jenestni warriors severely beat one of our carls, and hurt his wife. The clan ring encouraged Dangmag to sponsor poetic revenge. Dangmag gave fine gifts to a poet, so he would compose a satire ridiculing his attackers for their stupidity and viciousness. Soon, the poem was on everyone’s lips, and even the vengeance-takers’ kinfolk were laughing at them. The ducks delivered their annual tribute of food. The Uroxi warrior Olende the Stubborn tried to kill Angorri’s cattle, claiming they were broo-infested. Not knowing Olende well, we tried to determine if his judgment could be trusted. We decided that Olende was wise and judicious, as Uroxi go. Thus convinced, we destroyed the herd. The carls warned the clan ring again that there were too many people, and they still could not produce enough food for everyone. We chose to seize land from the neighboring Turtle clan. The carls muttered darkly that this had not worked before. We raided the Turtles. We could do no more than fight on the land we wished to claim, and eventually had to withdraw. The Bayberries raided us for 17 cows while we were raiding. The warriors warned the clan ring that many of the great and ancient families of the clan were not getting their due representation in the clan hall. Our clan leaders picked those families best equipped to survive. They were the wealthiest families, on the whole, and those who remained worried that it would be harder to get along without them. Although one in four of us prepared to go, they were entitled to more than one in four of our cattle, and more than a quarter of our goods, because they had worked hard for it. People said that they would prosper wherever they settled. We split off our own tula, giving them some of our land. They chose to call themselves the Bachadi, and said that they would be good neighbors to us. While plowing the fields, the carls found something strange. It was the enormous skull of some kind of dragon creature. We displayed it in a holy building. Our explorers discovered rocks that shine in the dark, which could be used to make valuable amulets. 1333 The god-talkers predicted that our crafters would have good luck this year. We discovered a large cache of bones and ivory in one of our tula’s valleys. Dunorl, a Uroxi warrior of the Konthasos clan, said that one of us was a secret killer and a worshipper of the Chaos god Thanatar. He wanted to interrogate everyone. The clan ring interrogated the people instead. Everyone denies being a Chaos cultist. No one seems to be lying. But Dunorl scolds you: “Of course you think they’re innocent. Whoever it is has been lying to you forever! You’re either stupid, or deliberately harboring Chaos! Others will know of your treachery!” He stomped away. The Horse Nomads raided us. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Barntadus died from an old injury which suddenly worsened, but not before composing an epic poem. We made sure that other clans heard Barntadus’s poem. Hofstaring and his family came from distant Esrolia, to ask for membership in our clan. We adopted them as tenders of sheep. Janstan failed to from his expedition to the tula, because we sent him alone. We mourned Janstan, and the ring members faced the wrath of his relatives and friends. Temertain told us we should take in Orlkensor Bronzebones, a warrior outlawed by the Namoldings. We took him in, and he joined Temertain’s household. The people were happy with the ring’s decision. Varsens, a Lonisi trader, offered to trade for all our gems. We let them fill two chests with the rocks, in exchange for 40 cattle. Natalina, a Lonisi clan trader, offered us 10 goods in exchange for the source of our ivory. We couldn’t come to an agreement, though. A Uroxi warrior came to demand that Orlkensor Bronzebones fight him to the death. We asked the Uroxi what Orlkensor had done to besmirch his honor. “It is not your business,” the Uroxi said. “It is between the defiler and me.” We asked Orlkensor why the Uroxi sought him. “I am grateful to you for taking me in. But please do not ask me more. I have sworn not to speak of this.” We suggest that they resolve their differences peacefully. This won a sad look from Orlkensor and crazed laughter from the Uroxi. We used force to drive the Uroxi off. Enraged, the Uroxi fought off the warriors we sent to drive him away. He wounded some of our fighters, and then said he would leave. “Orlkensor should not consider our dispute settled,” the Uroxi said. “I will not violate the sanctity of your clan hall by going in to get him now. But I shall get him. That I swear, by Urox’s horns.” We were raided by the Trolls. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Orlkensor Bronzebones distinguished himself in the fighting. A squabble broke out between those who claimed descent from the founders of the tribe, and those whose ancestors were the remnant people adopted into the tribe during the Storm Age. We scolded the people for dividing into factions. Both sides praised us for our strong words. “We have forgotten that our first loyalty is to the clan, and that we prosper together or suffer together.” They pledged to forget their old jealousies and work together. Randalyar led a delegation of carls to complain that we were too war-like, and that the crops were suffering as a result. We promised to reduce the number of raids. A group of ragged, ill-favored travelers asked for hospitality. They ate and drank, and praised our food. After the meal, they warned us that the Turtles were castigating our good name and that the Bayberry clan was planning to raid us soon. Led by Elgane, the women of the clan reproached the ring for losing so many of their husbands and sons in battle. The clan ring arranged marriages between widows and the clan’s surviving bachelors. Elgane herself married a fine carl named Korlmar, and helped the other women of the clan adjust to their new husbands. 1334 The god-talkers heard metal ringing in the distance, but could not tell if it was bells or swords. Glendara, a carl of our clan, said that her prize stallion, Tempest, had been stolen by Rangarda Dark-Eyes of the White Horse clan. The clan ring offered her compensation. Glendara said, “It is not the trade value of Tempest that concerns me. It is the principle of the thing. By stealing my prize stallion, she has stolen my honor.” We launched a legal claim against Rangarda Dark-Eyes. We took our claim to her clan ring. Rangarda denied that she had anything to do with the disappearance of Glendara’s horse. Her clan leaders seemed to make an honest effort to determine the truth, but ultimately ruled that there was no evidence of wrongdoing on Rangarda’s part. Glendara was most displeased by this result. We were raided by the Bayberries. Jostharl had the chance to fight like a hero. The enemy could not stand against our Humakti. He cut them down at will. We drove the Bayberries off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. We were raided by the Bayberries. We drove the Bayberries off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. The sons and daughter of Glendara recovered the stallion called Tempest, which they found secreted away on the tula of the White Horse clan. They slew one of Rangarda Dark-Eye’s sons, and wounded another. Orlkensor was found slain. We sought the killer among the Namoldings. Vingulf, the Uroxi warrior who once challenged Orlkensor to a duel, boldly admitted to the deed, and contemptuously tossed the wergild at our feet. We accepted the wergild, and considered the matter closed. The Issaries priestess Sora Goodseller came to our clan and asked if we wished to buy the great treasure known as Ernalda’s Oven. We bargained well, and soon we were enjoying the oven’s delightful bread, which always remained warm for hours. Refugees came seeking aid. They said they had escaped from the Horse-Spawn. We adopted them as family. We were raided by the Trolls. We exchanged missile fire with them, but never closed. The young farmer Frithorf reported that his stead was haunted. We launched a legal claim against the ghost. The ghost would not respond to Fantarl’s legal arguments. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that this ghost was sent by the Turtles to vex us, as part of their feud against us. We sent for shamans to banish the ghost. Shamans came and said they would banish the ghost for the low price of 15 cows. We accepted the arrangement. They danced around Frithorf’s stead, banged on a drum, and ate a brew of moss and lichens. Their eyes rolled back in their heads, and they spoke to the ghost. The bangings of the ghost stopped. The shamans said they had banished it. The haughty horse nomads who called themselves Grazers, but we know as the Horse-Spawn, came to reclaim the refugees we had adopted. We attacked them. Even these few horse-riders proved to be ferocious enemies. They fought with fiery arrows and lances. Their peculiar horses leapt through our tula like giant grasshoppers, falling among us where we least expected them. Many of our warriors were slain or wounded. The Grazers snatched up some of our leaders, taking Garnath, Jarang, and Aransanda away with them. The Turtles stole 14 cows. We could no longer afford to maintain our shrine to Ernalda. 1335 The omens for exploring were good. Kagradus began the Storm Tribe heroquest. Kagradus was told by Ernalda to make a tribe, so that he could challenge the Emperor. But the Doubting Wheel rolled up and told Kagradus not to make a tribe. He said, “I will catch you, and my wife will make you into soup.” He caught it, and took it home to Ernalda, who cooked it up in a soup, where it became small and silver. “It is nothing to be afraid of now,” Ernalda said. “Take it and use it to make the tribe.” Kagradus found Yinkin, who said he would join the tribe if Kagradus could defeat the champions of the Plant Tribe. Kagradus fought both of them. He tore off the many feet of Rustling Veins, which gave it sustenance. He blunted the many swords of Sharp Green, which gave it power. The Plant Tribe was defeated, and Yinkin said that his Cat Clan would join the Storm Tribe, provided it finds a way to remember its good laws. Kagradus found the Knowing God trapped inside a great cube. He hit the cube. The cube was broken, and so was Kagradus’s hand. The Knowing God, who hardly ever even smiles, could not stop laughing. “I might come to your confederation moot,” he said, “if these tears of mirth ever end, and I regain my sight.” Kagradus found Vadrus, who had decided to fight Yinkin and his Cat Clan. He challenged Vadrus to a contest of strength. Vadrus accepted the challenge. They arm-wrestled, and Kagradus won. “You have bested me, so I am obliged to do as you wish,” Vadrus said, “I will seek a foe other than Yinkin, and may even attend this confederation moot of yours — so long as that accursed cat is not among the chieftains there.” Kagradus found more chieftains to bring their clans to the confederation moot, but when they got there, they fell to fighting, and blamed him for making contradictory promises. Ernalda brought him implements of tribal regalia. She brought the Chest of Torcs, with which he could gift the clan leaders. She brought the Hall of Understanding, where people would settle their differences by talking them out. She brought the Crown of Authority, which made people respect his sacral powers and pledge allegiance to him. Most of the clans agreed to make the tribe, but there were still some who were stubborn. Then warriors of the Night Tribe came and attacked the quarrelling clans. Kagradus led the fight against the Night People. Everyone banded together to fight these hungry enemies. After they defeated the night warriors, they acclaimed Kagradus as their king. Kagradus returned to the land of mortals, his quest successful. The god-talkers said that our next attempt to make a tribe would benefit from the favor of Orlanth. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. We exchanged missile fire with them, but never closed. Trollkin were found in the grain bins. We drove them off. Einarth Milk-Eyes came to us with a prophecy. It seemed to mean that we should start a tribe. We honored Einarth with gifts. We took his words to heart, and decided it was time to assemble a tribe. We were raided by the Tanaharts. We exchanged missile fire with them, but never closed. We sent Kentvent with gifts to the Blue Jays. A priestess of Maran Gor came to us, and hinted that she might have a gift of some sort to give us. With exquisite and prudent politeness, we declined her gracious offer. A duck came to warn us of the growth of the Upland Marsh, home to a kingdom of undead ruled by an undying magician named Delecti. We told other clans to stop raiding the ducks, lest they give comfort to the undead. Once they realized the effects of their raids, they agreed. Our exploration party was taken prisoner by trolls and presented to their leader, Cragspider. “Our clan will promise never to come here again,” they said to her. “Very well, gnats. I expect you to adhere to this promise. Forever.” We conducted a divination to pick a name for our tribe, which suggested we call ourselves the Maboder. We met to decide which clans should get invitations to join our tribe. We were able to attract 96 new cottars to the clan. They brought with them 122 children. We negotiated with Clan Brown Boar, the first clan to settle in our immediate area, to see if we could bring them into our tribe. They gratefully accepted the council seats we offered them. We agreed to propitiate the spirit of the crossline stone. We demanded that the Brown Boars enact rituals during Sacred Time that would bless the entire tribe. We told them we would make war on the Beastfolk. We also made certain that they understood just how high a price the tribe would be paying by prosecuting their war for them. The Brown Boars said that they would come to a confederation moot. Prominent weaponthanes from the Jenestni and Brown Boar clans came to urge our weaponthanes to help them kill Offir, King of the Colymar tribe. Kagradus said to Leika that she should reconsider her plans. Leika was impressed by Kagradus’s words, and said that she would not pursue her plan. She praised Kagradus’s wisdom, and gave him a gift of silver. We talked to White Horse leaders to see if they wanted to join our new tribe. We agreed to a pledge of respect for Elmal in the rites of kingship. We demanded that they teach their sun magic to warriors of the other clans. They grudgingly accepted the one seat we offered them. We gave them gifts. They were unwilling to be in our debt, and gave reciprocal gifts of equal value. We agreed that the other clans would sacrifice to Elmal. We abandoned negotiations with the White Horses. Foul weather turned back our diplomatic mission to the Boskovi. We asked the eccentrics of Clan Tanahart to join our new tribe. We agreed that they could tutor the daughters of thanes. We accepted their offer of warriors for the other clans’ use. They agreed to the number of warriors we suggested. We accepted their gift of magic. We agreed that one monarch in four should be a Vingan queen. The Tanaharts said that they would come to a confederation moot. The Bayberries raided us for 17 cows. Korol, of the Bachad clan, asked us to give him grain, because we owed him a favor. We gave him more than he wanted. Korol praised our generosity, and said that all of Dragon Pass would hear of it. Explorers found the encampment where Horse-Spawn held our people as thralls. We sent a rescue party to free all thralls held by the Horse-Spawn. The mission was successful, Jarang, Aransanda, Garnath, and the rest of our people were returned to us. Other thralls were freed as well, and they promised to praise us to their clan chieftains. Some of our warriors were wounded, but none were killed or taken to be thralls. We learned of the Bayberry demands for joining the new tribe. We agreed that the other clans of the tribe should not trade with outsiders when they could trade with the Bayberries instead. We demanded favorable trade terms for other clans of the tribe seeking Bayberry grain. We agreed that the other clans should lend them fertility magic. We gifted them. To make the deal more attractive, we promised to give them a treasure. The Bayberry ring saw opportunities in our proposal. We could no longer afford to maintain our shrine to Chalana Arroy. The Boskovi clan had its tribe-making demands all written out before our emissaries even got there. We agreed that all kings of our future tribe would have to know how to read. We made them agree to make a large map, incorporating the exploration of all the clans of the tribe. They said they would take our offer under advisement. We agreed that they should sit in the Lhankor Mhy seat of the tribal council. The Boskovi said that they would come to a confederation moot. The confederation moot started badly. Many of the clans were offended by the concessions granted to others. We bargained to get the satisfied clans to please the dissatisfied ones. We made progress. We spoke eloquently in praise of the agreement. We made progress. Soon there were only minor objections to the terms we negotiated. The confederation moot was a success. We became a tribe, the Maboder. The clans of the new tribe gathered to choose a king. We nominated Kagradus to take the throne. Despite Fantarl’s words, Jonrik of the Boskovi was chosen to be king. The time came for Jonrik to undergo the rites of kingship. We celebrated the birth of a new tribe. Jonrik attempted the rites of kingship, and was killed by ghosts of the Dragonkill. After a time of mourning, we would have to pick a new candidate. 1336 The god-talkers predicted good calving. The clans of the new tribe gathered once again to choose a king. We nominated Kagradus to take the throne. Despite Jorator’s words, Hofstaring of the Bayberries was chosen to be king. The time came for our next candidate, Hofstaring, to undergo the rites of kingship. We celebrated the birth of a new tribe. Hofstaring completed the rites of kingship. The celebration lasted for days. Brodasart, son of Glendara, was slain by relatives of Rangarda Dark-Eyes of the White Horse clan. Farnan composed a poem in honor of Brodasart. The poem was a beautiful tribute to a brave fighting carl, and everyone said they would remember it always. The Turtles raided us. The Turtle clan burned 2 steads. We exchanged missile fire with them, but never closed. Broyan spoke for the warriors when he said that they were stretched too thin, and that more fighters were needed. We sent Penterest on a mission to find the best warriors available. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. A group of Horse-Spawn circled behind us and burned part of our defenses. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Penterest returned from his recruiting mission with 11 new weaponthanes. Women found a talking fox in our woods. It offered us luck in exchange for 25 cows. We passed on its offer. The fox said that we would never know the full measure of luck we had refused. The harvest was plentiful. Yinkin cultists offered to perform a ritual which would make better hunters out of our alynxes. They would be better able to kill disease-bearing forest rats, or so the Yinkini said. We offered them alynx kittens. They were honored, and inspected the kittens carefully. A tear fell from the leader’s eye. “These creatures are too beautiful to take from you. We will perform the ritual, and will return the kittens to you as a token of our esteem.” Then they gathered our alynxes together, and successfully performed their Yinkin ritual. A bandit shaman named Perandal captured the carl Salinarg and demanded an outrageous ransom for his return. We sought the blessings of our ancestral spirits before fighting the shaman. The god-talkers could not contact our ancestral spirits. We sent a war party to liberate Salinarg. Our war party fell upon Perandal and his bandits and scattered them. We rescued Salinarg. Perandal escaped. From a distance, he screamed that he was going to curse us. We were raided by the Konthasos. The Konthasos clan burned 2 steads. As the battle began, Kagradus felt bursting with magical power. With courage and cunning, he led our warriors against the enemy. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. They burned 2 more steads. We could no longer afford to maintain our shrine to Odayla. 1337 There were many swirling gusts of wind, but nobody was sure what this meant. While exploring the wildlands of our own tula, our explorers found 12 cows worth of fragments of a silver chain. Mordrim the Stout came to trade for Elmal’s Amber. We refused to sell it. Temertain began the Chalana Arroy Heals the Scars heroquest. Temertain found himself in a strange palace, where foreigners requested his healing aid. He healed them, and then went to heal the wounded Storm People. He healed the foreign people. One of the foreigners blocked Temertain’s way and threatened to kill him. He cured the foreigner of his foreignness, and so he protected Temertain. He said his name was Elmal. Temertain healed many storm people, but was then confronted with Orlanth, who wanted to kill him. Temertain healed his wounded judgment; he made him one of his attendants. The Unholy Trio appeared in the world and caused trouble at Orlanth’s court. Orlanth’s brother, Kolat, argued with them. So Malia first used her terrible gift, the scar of disease, and made Kolat unwell. Temertain defeated Malia without hurting her, and healed Kolat. The Unholy Trio embroiled the world in war. Storm Bull decided to kill all of them, starting with his brother, Ragnaglar. They fought; Urox wounded Ragnaglar and was ready to kill him. He learned two important secrets, which allowed him to confront Urox. Urox did not kill Ragnaglar that day. King Heort was killed in the war against Chaos, and Humakt tried to prevent Temertain from healing him. Temertain healed the scar of certitude under Humakt’s tongue. He then healed King Heort, who kept people alive while Chalana Arroy and the other gods went to hell to heal Yelm and the world. Temertain returned to the land of mortals from his successful quest. Our enemies made peace with us, and gave us gifts. The delegation from the Holy Country returned to reclaim the Iron Spike, bearing the gifts they had promised. We said we didn’t have it any more. One of them looked at the stone on his ring. “You have given away something very valuable, something that did not belong to you. You will regret this, I assure you,” he said. Then they left. Broyan, a thane of the Boskovi clan, asked us for information about Dastandros, chief of the White Horse clan. He said that as tribe-mates, we should extend them a favor now in exchange for one in the future. We endeavored to answer his questions. Broyan asked us if Dastandros was a holy chief. “Dastandros is very generous,” we said. Broyan departed, and thanked us for the information. Not long afterwards, he returned to our tula to withdraw his thanks. “The information you gave us was mistaken at best and deceitful at worst. Our relations with the White Horses have been sorely tested, and it is your careless words which are to blame.” Broyan continued, “I will make sure that all the clans of the Maboder know how you worthless your word is.” Jarang came back from the mountains and told us that he had found the lair of a wyrm. We sent Intagarn to take the treasure without killing the wyrm. Intagarn found the wyrm to be quite intelligent, although not quite intelligent enough. Intagarn taught it how to gamble, and beat it handily at dice. Einarth Milk-Eyes came to us with a prophecy that seemed to mean we must become king of the tribe, and reenact our main deity’s heroquest, and six others. When we questioned him further, he just smiled and hummed a strange tune. He toasted our generosity, and said that this confirmed the prophecy. Our people made merry, and toasted Einarth and the clan ring. Nobles from the Karandoli clan warned us that they were starting a feud against us. We composed a poem portraying them as cruel villains. Fantarl’s stirring condemnation of their vileness was soon recited in other tulas in Dragon Pass. They knew that we were justified in our actions against the Karandoli. Sora Goodseller arrived to tell us of three new tribes that had arisen in the wake of our new tribe. They were the Kheldon tribe, the Dundealos tribe, and the Aranwyth tribe. We suggested to the other clans that we seek an alliance with the Aranwyth. We convinced them that it would be good to do so. We found a cave full of dangerous, armored rodents on our tula. Intagarn said he would lure them away with trickster magic. He pranced about the cave mouth, singing a song which he said was an irresistibly salacious tune in the language of the killer rodents. It seemed absurd, but the rodents formed a line and followed Intagarn as he danced away from the borders of our tula and towards those of the Karandoli clan. We were raided by the Karandoli. We exchanged missile fire with them, but never closed. We made peace overtures to Queen Tarkala of the Aranwyth. We said: “With peace, we can spread the laws of Orlanth.” Tarkala said that the laws were important, and by agreeing to follow them together, we would win the favor of Orlanth. The weaponthanes complained that they had not raided in years. They refused to accept the ring’s authority to decide when to raid. Fantarl improvised a stirring poem, praising the warriors for their vigilance and ability in defending the tula. We spotted a cattle raid by the Turtles. We drove the Turtles off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. 1338 The god-talkers said we needed to learn one of Odayla’s blessings. A family returning from a visit to the Bachadi were slain by Praxian Sable Riders. Only the young boy, Derik, survived. We composed a poem in honor of the slain. The people praised our poem, which gave them some cheer in a time of mourning. Strangers who said they were from the east requested hospitality. We refused them. They attacked us, using weird implements to cast shrieking spells that hurt our ears and made us bleed. Their magic killed many, and gave a strange shaking disease to others. When we were overwhelmed, and could no longer fight, they admitted they were not from the east, but from the south. They had come at the behest of the Pharaoh, to punish us for depriving him of the Iron Spike. “Let all of Dragon Pass know that the Pharaoh’s reach is long, and his just fury unquenchable,” they said. Then they departed. A delegation from the Karandoli came to our tula to suggest a peace settlement. We said to them, “We are always ready to talk.” The leaders of the two clans resolved the long-standing disputes that divided us, and made peace. Our feud with the Karandoli was over. Thadart, the warrior whose visage was made monstrous by the alien god of the Tusk Riders, said that other members of the clan had dishonored him, and demanded that the clan ring reproach them. Fantarl reproached the people for dishonoring him. Jerernalda reproached the people for dishonoring him. They hung their heads in contrition, and said that they had not acted properly. They promised to mend their ways, and Thadart said he had much ale for them to drink, if they would do him the honor of accepting his hospitality. The people drank long into the night, and the matter was settled. The dangerous rodents came back and bit children and horses. We blocked up the cave entrance. Many of the carls were bitten as they piled rocks inside it. They said the warriors should have been ordered to exterminate the creatures. We were raided by the Konthasos. The Konthasos clan burned 2 steads. As the battle began, Jarang remembered a powerful dream he had the night before, a dream that could have meant victory or defeat. His spells failed, and we had to fight on without his help. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. They burned 5 more steads. We raided the Turtles and eluded their patrols. We could do no more than fight on the land we wished to claim, and eventually had to withdraw. The Turtles took 14 of our women auxiliaries captive. We ransomed our prisoners from the Turtles. The widows of three men slain in a Konthasos raid demanded vengeance. Eloquent words were spoken, and Askula proclaimed that mercy had beaten hatred. The Turtles sent word that they held two of our warriors hostage. We sent a small war party to rescue the hostages. We tried to rescue our kinfolk, but although we slipped into the tula at night easily enough, we could not find the hostages we knew were there. Indeed, the enemy found us instead. One of our weaponthanes took a stray shot, and died. Others were injured in the skirmishing. We sent a small war party to take hostages from the Turtles. Our warriors set a brush fire near the enemy tula, and nabbed some of our enemy during the ensuing confusion. They had to bruise a few weaponthanes on the way out, but made it home safely. We seized 5 hostages. They paid us the ransom we demanded for the extra hostages. Varsens led a delegation of weaponthanes to complain that the carls were being favored over them. Jerernalda composed a poem praising the weaponthanes and satirizing the carls. The poem became quite popular, and was soon recited in other tulas. The Horse-Spawn raided us. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Priestesses of Chalana Arroy said they would heal our sick and wounded in exchange for a future favor. We asked them to heal all of our sick and wounded. They did so, and the people rejoiced. The priestesses departed, reminding us that they would one day come back to ask for a favor in return. Wilms of the Red Fox clan offered us gifts. We threw a feast for thanes of Wilms’s clan. They toasted our generosity, and said they would speak of it to others. Our people made merry, and also toasted the clan ring. Thadart, the warrior with the Tusk Rider face, implored us to find him a bride. Without making any promises, clan leaders said they would try to find him a bride. After long discussions with a number of friendly clans, we found a prospect for him: Kistrald of the Bachad clan. She was neither lovely nor clever, but when Thadart’s set eyes upon her, both were filled with love. The people, who had embraced Thadart and his cause, rejoiced. They set about making a wedding celebration that would be remembered in Dragon Pass for generations to come. The dangerous rodents came back and bit children and horses. We ordered our weaponthanes to exterminate them. Many of them were wounded, but they said that they killed them all. Explorers found Humakt’s Raven Banner. We chose to keep Humakt’s Raven Banner and ponder its bittersweet blessing. We heard that the Pharaoh was searching for one of his former weaponthanes. 1339 Our cows were expected to give abundant milk. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. Kagradus distinguished himself in the battle. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. The Brown Boars took some of our carls as thralls. We took the matter to a tribal moot. The other clans said that the Brown Boars were wrong to take thralls from their own tribe. They were ordered to return the captured carls, and to pay compensation for stealing their freedom and for mistreating them. Explorers encountered a bark-clad shaman who predicted an auspicious marriage and warned against an attack by a giant spider. We decided to find the shaman and offer to adopt him. They looked high and low for the shaman, but did not find him. Orlkarth, a trader of the Jenestni clan, warned us to be wary of another trader, Yaransor of the Vanstali clan. We avoided becoming entangled in this dispute. Garnath convinced the White Horses to create a new trading route. The harvest was plentiful. Aslandar and his family came from distant Esrolia, to ask for membership in our clan. We accepted them, and on that day they became Doe. Swen, thane of the Greydog clan, invited us to accompany him on a raid against the Telmori wolf-folk. We accepted his invitation. He was pleased by this response, and said that his clan would not forget the aid we gave them this day. We sent Jarang to lead our war party against the Telmori. Together our clans laid waste to the Telmori encampment, slaying their warriors and driving their women and children deep into the woods. Orkarla, daughter of Baranwolf and Valensta, married Kangharl of the Karandoli. Everyone agreed it was a fine feast, and that the couple would do well. We spotted a cattle raid by the Turtles. We drove the Turtles off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. The warrior Hendrick, outlawed from his clan, came to us for refuge. We made him one of our weaponthanes. We were able to attract 15 new cottars to the clan. They brought with them 23 children. 1340 The god-talkers heard whispers in a strange language, but could not make out the meaning. A son, Palagor, was born to Thadart and Kistrald. The people were concerned, because Palagor shared his father’s facial deformity. Clan leaders sought to quell the peoples’ fears. Jerernalda’s soothing words made them less apprehensive, and they gave many generous birth gifts to Thadart and Kistrald. The dangerous rodents came back and bit children and horses. We ordered our weaponthanes to exterminate them. They said the carls should have been ordered to block the cave entrance. Many of them were wounded, but they said that they killed them all. A young girl named Theya received the gift of Ernalda’s Foresight when she was initiated, but her first visions were frightening. We sent her away to be trained at the Great Ernalda temple in Clearwine. After that day, whenever the names of great clans of Dragon Pass were mentioned, our clan was always one of the first named. Uralda cultists complained that we were neglecting the Cow Mother’s worship. We asked them to conduct a ceremony, and held a joyful feast in their honor. We were raided by the Praxians. We twirled the Bull-roarer, but it had no effect on the odd Praxian beasts. We took 13 captives from the Praxians. Hendrick distinguished himself in the fighting. We were able to ransom the prisoners. Penterest led a caravan to trade with the Karandoli. Eonislara, betrothed to Jorator of the Jenestni clan, was seduced by Korol, the notorious troublemaking poet of the Turtle clan. We told Jorator what had happened, but urged him to continue with the wedding. Jorator angrily refused to honor his betrothal. “I thought I was marrying a good maiden, not a wild and dirty alynx!” When our people heard this, they were outraged. One of the warriors composed a poem. It was about how galling it is to have to swallow an insult. Intagarn led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. When we twirled the Bull-roarer, about half of the enemy’s horses bolted in terror. Although we held the field, we weren’t able to take any captives. Traders told us that the Dwarfs raided the Greydog clan, doing great harm to them. We told them that the Turtles sent the Dwarfs after them. They believed our tale. Eonislara turned out to be pregnant. Her kinfolk were embarrassed. We left the matter to her kinfolk. People were happy that the ring did not interfere. We were raided by the Trolls. Bright rays streamed from Elmal’s Amber, and where they touched our arrows and slingstones, they burst into flame. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. The Turtles raided us. Our forces eagerly followed the Burning Standard into battle. Although we held the field, we weren’t able to take any captives. Luckily, the Burning Standard wasn’t consumed by the flames. We were raided by the Konthasos. Our forces eagerly followed the Burning Standard into battle. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Luckily, the Burning Standard wasn’t consumed by the flames. 1341 All of the omens were unlucky. Saronil of the Konthasos clan, who had bested us in several raids, demanded heavy tribute, lest they attack us again. We raided the Konthasos. Bright rays streamed from Elmal’s Amber, and where they touched our arrows and slingstones, they burst into flame. We drove the Konthasos from the battlefield, and were able to plunder their tula. After the battle, we found that the gem had turned into ashes. We attacked them, and they soon forgot their demands for tribute. The Bayberries raided us for 19 cows while we were raiding. Our herds dwindled, and the people grew restive. The clan ring said, “We will trade for more cows.” The people accepted this promise. Elmal cultists offered to perform a horse ritual for us. We asked them what was to happen during the ritual. “You, we cannot tell,” they said. They then pointed to the trickster who was with them, drunk and wearing a horse costume. “Him, he does not want to know.” Some of them laughed, and the trickster looked nervous. We refused their offer. They said it was too bad that we did not wish to honor Elmal. Gardrostan spoke for the warriors when he said that they were stretched too thin, and that more fighters were needed. We sent Intagarn on a mission to find the best warriors available. Penterest led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. The dangerous rodents came back and bit children and horses. We blocked up the cave entrance. Many of the carls were bitten as they piled rocks inside it. They said the warriors should have been ordered to exterminate the creatures. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. When we twirled the Bull-roarer, about half of the enemy’s horses bolted in terror. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Hofstaring, king of our tribe, resigned the throne. A moot was convened to choose a new king. Both Ernaldness and Angorri were supported by many worthy sponsors. We nominated Kagradus to take the throne. Ernaldness was chosen to rule the Maboder tribe. Ernaldness, of the Tanaharts, got ready for the rites of kingship. We celebrated with influential thanes of other clans. The thanes said that our generosity was less than that of many other clans. Ernaldness completed the rites of kingship. The celebration lasted for days. Cruelly and without provocation, troublesome ducks burnt one of our barns. Sternly, we ordered the ducks to increase their tribute to us. Intagarn returned from his recruiting mission with 2 new weaponthanes. The Konthasos raided us. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. 1342 The god-talkers identified no omens, and this troubled them. The Horse-Spawn raided us. When we twirled the Bull-roarer, about half of the enemy’s horses bolted in terror. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. The dangerous rodents came back and bit children and horses. We decided to seek outsiders to exterminate the creatures. We found weaponthanes of the Bachad clan willing to do it, for half a cow worth of silver each. Many of them were wounded, and they blamed us for not warning them how dangerous these rodents were. They said that all of the creatures were dead. A tree spirit deep in the woods demanded a human sacrifice, offering magic or food in exchange. We sent a party to fell the tree. It took several days to locate the tree, but Jarang persisted. One man almost took off his own foot with an axe, and the tree managed to snatch up Jarang and battered him severely with its branches before dropping him from a great height. When the tree finally toppled, it somehow managed to crush one of the party. Wilms of the Bayberries wooed and married Eonislara. He proclaimed himself lucky to find such a beautiful and fertile wife. We were able to attract 29 new carls to the clan. They brought with them 48 children. Desrada’s uncle found out that she was sneaking off into the forest to speak with a spirit. We sacrificed to the spirit. Our god-talkers saw many good omens after the sacrifice was made. The dangerous rodents came back and bit children and horses. Intagarn said he would lure them away with trickster magic. He pranced about the cave mouth, singing a song which he said was an irresistibly salacious tune in the language of the killer rodents. It seemed absurd, but the rodents formed a line and followed Intagarn as he danced away from the borders of our tula and towards those of the Turtle clan. The warriors warned the clan ring that many of the great and ancient families of the clan were not getting their due representation in the clan hall. We sought volunteers to split off. Most were reluctant to step forward, but everyone knew that a split in the clan was necessary for survival. Eventually a quarter of our families stepped forward. We split off our own tula, giving them some of our land. They chose to call themselves the Taralings, and said that they would be good neighbors to us. Harsaltar, a rebellious thrall belonging to the Bachad clan, came to beg for our aid. He wanted us to protect escaped thralls from outraged Bachad thanes. We offered to buy the rebellious thralls from the Bachadi. Penterest was told that there were 10 rebellious thralls, and that they were worth five cows apiece. Penterest decided to bargain them down. We let them live free, as outlaws. The people were glad; by rescuing unfortunate, mistreated thralls we honored our ancestors and strengthened our clan magic. During our absence, Harsaltar slipped away and rejoined his group. He and the other thralls soon melted into the landscape. We later heard that they migrated to parts unknown, after which no one ever heard anything more about them. 1343 There were many swirling gusts of wind, but nobody was sure what this meant. Theya returned from her training at Clearwine. We were visited by strange chariot-riders, who said they were from distant Ralios. Jorator accompanied them on their quest, along with 6 warriors and interpreters. Before they left, they gave us silver torcs and gold arm bands of surpassing quality. Several of our people went with them as they continued their quest. The Turtles raided us for 26 cows. Kagradus began the Storm Tribe heroquest. Kagradus was told by Ernalda to make a tribe, so that he could challenge the Emperor. But the Doubting Wheel rolled up and told Kagradus not to make a tribe. He tried to catch the Doubting Wheel in a net. When he threw a net over it, the Doubting Wheel shrank down and became a tiny thing, small enough for Kagradus to put in his purse. Kagradus found Yinkin, who said he would join the tribe if Kagradus could defeat the champions of the Plant Tribe. “Do not waste my time, younger brother,” Vadrus said. “I have a cat to skin.” Kagradus said, “If we had a tribe, you could punish him without hurting him.” “This is a very strange thing you say,” Vadrus mused, “but perhaps it has a ring of truth to it. I will seek a new foe, and may even attend this confederation moot of yours — so long as my right to punish upstart Yinkin is made clear to all.” Kagradus found more chieftains to bring their clans to the confederation moot, but when they got there, they fell to fighting, and blamed him for making contradictory promises. He offered to fight each and every one of them. They were quite ready to do this, and Kagradus was preparing for the battle when Ernalda brought him implements of tribal regalia. After that day, whenever the names of great clans of Dragon Pass were mentioned, our clan was always one of the first named. We were able to attract 29 new carls to the clan. They brought with them 56 children. A large bear broke into one of the sheds used for women’s magic. We lured the bear away from our settlement by leaving food for it. Theya foretold that we would be plagued by ice demons. Our warriors were stricken by a strange palsy. We conducted a divination. The god-talkers said that the malady was caused by the Turtles, who had hired shamans to send bad spirits after us. We sacrificed to Chalana Arroy. The god-talkers said that the signs were bad. Kallyr, the girl raised in a shield, had become quite the young warrior. We sent her away to be trained under a famous holy warrior of Vinga. 1344 We couldn’t help our trading with Sacred Time rituals. We were raided by the Bachadi. We drove the Bachadi off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. We took 9 Bachad auxiliaries captive. Derik the Praxian-Hater distinguished himself in the fighting. We were able to ransom the prisoners. The dangerous rodents came back and bit children and horses. Intagarn said he would lure them away with trickster magic. He pranced about the cave mouth, singing a song which he said was an irresistibly salacious tune in the language of the killer rodents. It seemed absurd, but the rodents formed a line and followed Intagarn as he danced away from the borders of our tula and towards those of the Boskovi clan. The forces of cold and darkness attacked our land with snow and wind. Our herds were threatened. We sought the help of Orlanthi Wind Lords from many clans. The ice demons were driven off before serious harm was done to the herd. Together the clans feasted to the defeat of Valind. Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Bachadi violated our peace with their tribe. We demanded compensation from the Aranwyth. They offered us fair compensation, and we accepted it. The Horse-Spawn raided us. When we twirled the Bull-roarer, about half of the enemy’s horses bolted in terror. We exchanged missile fire with them, but never closed. A plague of snakes came upon us, upsetting the cattle and frightening the children. We sacrificed to Orlanth. The snakes went away. Derik, whose family was slain by Sable Riders, became a singleminded young warrior, unpopular with the older weaponthanes. We sent Derik on a raid against Sable Riders. The Turtles raided us for 19 cows. Derik is back, triumphant. He led our warriors to a Sable Rider encampment, where he slew many and pillaged their goods. None of our warriors were so much as scratched in the fight. One of the young women in the clan, Insterid, said she hears a rock speaking only to her and took to making offerings. Her mother said this was not the first such claim. We performed a divination, but the omens were troubling. Insterid began spending all her time at the rock. We woke one morning to find a scrap of cloth, a splash of blood and a lock of hair. Our warriors were stricken by a strange palsy. We conducted a divination. The god-talkers said that the malady was caused by the Turtles, who had hired shamans to send bad spirits after us. We sacrificed to Chalana Arroy. The god-talkers said that the Healing Goddess had banished the bad spirits. Penterest led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. We were able to attract 11 new carls to the clan. They brought with them 20 children. Randan Korlmarson walked past a great rock in the back pastures of our tula. One day it spoke to him. It claimed to be named Tarard Riel, and to be the guardian spirit of the local hills. We made offerings to show our friendship to the spirit. Tarard Riel became our friend. It said it would entertain sacrifices in the future. We were raided by the Trolls. As soon as we began playing the Bagpipes of Ronskei, all the trollkin ran away. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. We spotted a cattle raid by the Turtles. Our forces eagerly followed the Burning Standard into battle. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Luckily, the Burning Standard wasn’t consumed by the flames. 1345 The god-talkers said we needed to sacrifice to Vinga before we went exploring. The Red Foxes challenged us and others to a cooking contest. We told our people to drink up and eat well. The people seemed to be in a stormy mood, and the fine foods prepared by the other clans did little to leaven their agitated tempers. Three young men all sought the hand of Theya, who had received Ernalda’s gift of visions. We married her to Orlkensor of the Boskovi clan. He gave us 30 cows. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. When we twirled the Bull-roarer, about half of the enemy’s horses bolted in terror. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Derik Single-Path told us he was leaving to seek new challenges. We gave him a parting magical blessing. He thanked us for our generosity. “Your blessings will aid me in my journey. It will be a long one, because I do not know exactly what I am looking for. Perhaps, after I find it, I will come back here and tell you what it was.” Then he took his leave of us. The harvest was plentiful. Humakti warriors sought our help in a war party against walking corpses. We sent warriors to fight alongside them. They said we were honorable, and then departed with our warriors in tow. Temertain began the Chalana Arroy Heals the Scars heroquest. Temertain found himself in a strange palace, where foreigners requested his healing aid. He healed them, and then went to heal the wounded Storm People. His magic was not strong enough to heal the foreign people. Temertain found himself back in the ritual ground. The quest had failed. Penterest led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. We were raided by the Turtles. We showed the head of Markanth Margrainsson, and the Turtles pulled back in confusion. We drove the Turtles from the field with a withering hail of stones and arrows. 1346 The god-talkers forecast that our market would be unprofitable this year. We received an offer of a magic charm from wandering spirit-talkers, as a goad to action regarding Einarth Milk-Eyes’s prophecy. We asked them to explain themselves. The older one said that we were slow to heroquest. He pointed out that we were not even king of the tribe yet. We accepted the charm and gave gifts in kind. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. When we twirled the Bull-roarer, about half of the enemy’s horses bolted in terror. We exchanged missile fire with them, but never closed. The Issaries trader Yaransor came to our clan and asked if we wished to buy a treasure known as the Mist Paper. Yaransor persuaded us to pay more than we had intended. But we had the paper, to use in battle against our foes. The dangerous rodents came back and bit children and horses. We ordered our weaponthanes to exterminate them. They said the carls should have been ordered to block the cave entrance. Many of them were wounded, but they said that they killed them all. The renowned poet Selemal was our honored guest at a great feast. He created a poem in honor of the gods. Sartark spoke for the warriors when he said that they were stretched too thin, and that more fighters were needed. We sent Intagarn on a mission to find the best warriors available. Uralda cultists sought aid in a great ceremony to prevent cattle sickness in a distant corner of Dragon Pass. We accepted their offer, and gave them gifts. They thanked us for the gifts. Our tribal queen, Ernaldness, died choking on her food after breaking the oaths of hospitality. A moot was convened to choose a new king. Both Arene and Dorasor were supported by many worthy sponsors. We nominated Kagradus to take the throne. Arene was chosen to rule the Maboder tribe. Arene, of the Brown Boars, got ready for the rites of kingship. We celebrated with influential thanes of other clans. The thanes were impressed by our generosity. Arene completed the rites of kingship. The celebration lasted for days. We were raided by the Trolls. As soon as we began playing the Bagpipes of Ronskei, all the trollkin ran away. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Our cattle raid against the Turtles was spotted. We drove the Turtles from the battlefield, and were able to plunder their tula. Kallyr returned from her training. We sent her to lead a raid. We raided the Turtles and eluded their patrols. Our forces eagerly followed the Burning Standard into battle. We were driven off and had no opportunity to obtain booty. Luckily, the Burning Standard wasn’t consumed by the flames. The Turtles raided us. We showed the head of Markanth Margrainsson, and the Turtles pulled back in confusion. We drove the Turtles off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. 1347 The outlook for trading was good. Intagarn returned from his recruiting mission with 11 new weaponthanes. Theya the Prophetess gave birth to her first child, a vigorous boy, but he died of no obvious cause after a week. Shamans came to our tula and took credit for our prosperity. We gave them hospitality and sent them on their way. The shamans noisily and enthusiastically ate our food and drank our drinks. When it became clear to them that we intended to gift them no further, the lead shaman shook his head. “How sad ingratitude is,” he said, departing. “How disappointed the spirits will be.” The dangerous rodents came back and bit children and horses. Furthering a long-festering feud, young boys of the White Horse clan came here to attack a boy of our clan. We told the boys that they should renounce vengeance. They said they would do so. Nobles from the Boskovi clan warned us that they were starting a feud against us. We composed a poem portraying them as fools. Jerernalda’s hilarious verses cheered the people, who lost their fear of the Boskovi and were heartened in the face of the upcoming feud against them. The harvest was plentiful. We were raided by the Greenwings. We showed the head of Markanth Margrainsson, and the Greenwings pulled back in confusion. We drove the Greenwings from the field with a withering hail of stones and arrows. Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Greenwings violated our peace with their tribe. We demanded compensation from the Aranwyth. They offered us fair compensation, and we accepted it. Intagarn, the devotee of Eurmal on our clan ring, stole 100 cows from the White Horses. We decided to keep the herd. The White Horse clan sent a delegation to ask for their cows back. We gave them wealth instead. Warrior women of the Boskovi attacked us, damaging the clan hall and wounding both weaponthanes and ring members. We launched a legal claim against them at the tribal moot. The Boskovi were ordered to pay restitution to us. The Turtles raided us. We showed the head of Markanth Margrainsson, and the Turtles pulled back in confusion. We drove the Turtles from the field with a withering hail of stones and arrows. Unfortunately, Markanth’s head crumbled in the heat of battle. 1348 The gods blessed our clan with extra magic this year. Theya gave birth to a healthy girl, but it died suddenly the morning after. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. When we twirled the Bull-roarer, about half of the enemy’s horses bolted in terror. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Kallyr said she wanted to take warriors to the land of the troll-men to fight Warlan Darkbreath and take the Band of One Hundred. We said she should do it. We told her to take warriors with her. She departed with them for the Holy Country. Yinkin cultists offered to perform a ritual which would make better hunters out of our alynxes. They would be better able to kill disease-bearing forest rats, or so the Yinkini said. We offered them alynx kittens. They were honored, and inspected the kittens carefully. The leader’s brow furrowed, and sadness washed over his face. “I’m very sorry,” he said, “but these are descendants of Doubleshadow the Worthless. You’d be best to simply let them loose outside your tula. Yinkin would not honor such a gift.” We asked what their price was. It was satisfactory, and we came to an agreement. They gathered our alynxes together, and successfully performed their Yinkin ritual. The harvest was plentiful. The Trolls raided us. As soon as we began playing the Bagpipes of Ronskei, all the trollkin ran away. The Trolls were content to harass us with missile fire as we withdrew. We found Bachad hunters poaching deep within our territory. We drove them off, warning them never to trespass again. The Turtles raided us. Our forces eagerly followed the Burning Standard into battle. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Luckily, the Burning Standard wasn’t consumed by the flames. 1349 It was an auspicious year for heroquesting. The widows of three men slain in a Turtle raid demanded vengeance. Eloquent words were spoken, and Hindala proclaimed that mercy had beaten hatred. Traders told us that the Dwarfs raided the Bachad clan, doing great harm to them. Vastyr was the only one to return from Kallyr’s mission to the Kitori lands. He described a glorious and bloody battle, and presented us with the treasure called the Band of One Hundred. We invited other clans to a funeral feast. They cheered and wept as we told them the tale of Kallyr’s glorious death. We caught Jonrik of the Vanstali clan sneaking into one of our steads. We told the Vanstali that they would have to pay to get him back. We convinced them to pay more than the customary ransom. Yaransor, a trader of the Vanstali clan, warned us to be wary of another trader, Orlkarth of the Jenestni clan. We closely questioned Yaransor, to determine if she was telling the truth. We decided that she was. We promised to be wary of Orlkarth. We were raided by the Bachadi. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Bachadi violated our peace with their tribe. We demanded compensation from the Aranwyth. They offered us fair compensation, and we accepted it. We spotted a cattle raid by the Turtles. Although we held the field, we weren’t able to take any captives. 1350 Eurmal laughed during Sacred Time, and said that misfortune would plague us until we replaced at least half of our clan ring. A delegation of Beastfolk came to us and warned us that Ironhoof would come back if we offended them further. We promised not to offend them further. They said we were saying the right words, but that only actions would ease their suspicions. The Horse-Spawn raided us. When we twirled the Bull-roarer, about half of the enemy’s horses bolted in terror. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. The Red Foxes sought our help when elves demanded the right to worship at their shrine to Flamal. We told the Red Foxes they should allow the elves limited use of their temple. The Red Foxes agreed to consider this, if we could convince the elves to limit their use of the temple. We approached the elves, and told them that they were not entitled to take over a temple they had not built. We urged them to agree to our proposal. The elves agreed to limit their use of the temple, and both sides of the dispute said they were satisfied with its resolution. We heard that the terrible Praxian hero Jaldon Goldentooth was cutting a swath through Dragon Pass, and heading our way. We sent our noncombatants away. Goldentooth’s horde bypassed our tula, but ravaged our neighbors, the Taralings. Engarna sought divorce from Jarstakos. She said he had taken a mistress, and that she deserved to keep the bride price as a fine for adultery. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that the stink of adultery was on Jarstakos like fur on an alynx. We paid the bride price. “Your justice honors me,” said Engarna, as she left our tula to rejoin her kin among the Blue Jays. Our traders saw that the Taralings had been devastated by Jaldon Goldentooth’s raiders. We gave them trade goods. They accepted our help. Inganna took ill, because someone had woven Chaos runes into her skirt. We searched for outlaws. We did not find any. Derik Furman, now the leader of a band of nomad warriors, sought our help in the battle against Jaldon Goldentooth. We told him: “We have suffered already from fighting Jaldon.” “I look around me,” said Derik, “And I see unburnt steads. I see cattle which have not been stolen. I see a fat and prosperous people who are afraid to fight. I see people without honor. From this day forward, when people ask me if I was born into your clan, I will say that I was not.” A duck claiming to be a Humakti Deathlord stalked into the tula, challenging our finest warrior to a duel. We accepted the challenge, but only to first blood. To our shock, Twelveswords killed Jarang with his first blow. Our Humakti said Twelveswords bore a gift from Humakt. We were raided by an enormous force of Tusk Riders. Some people blamed Thadart, the warrior with the Tusk Rider face, for betraying us to them. Thadart denied this accusation, and offered to ride out to negotiate with the Tusk Riders. We let him do this. Our patrollers watched nervously as Thadart rode out. For a moment, it looked as if the tuskers would ride right over him, but then they stopped, and parleyed. We anxiously looked on as Thadart gestured and snorted at the Tusk Rider leaders, and they gestured and snorted in return. Abruptly, one of them took his spear and impaled poor Thadart upon it. They laughed as Thadart died, and then rode on towards us. We were raided by the Tusk Riders. We burned the Mist Paper, and hid in the dense smoke it produced. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. And they took 12 of our women auxiliaries captive. After the battle, we saw no more of Thadart’s family. We later heard that Kistrald took her children and returned to her kin in the Bachad clan. After many weeks at death’s door, Inganna recovered from the illness caused by the hexed skirt. Dangmag led a delegation of weaponthanes to complain that the carls were being favored over them. Jerernalda composed a poem praising the weaponthanes and satirizing the carls. The poem became quite popular, and was soon recited in other tulas. 1351 Trading wasn’t expected to be as profitable this year. Derik Furman’s warriors brought him into our clan hall, gravely wounded. He had slain Jaldon Goldentooth. We tried to magically heal Derik. He regained consciousness a few days later. Within a week, he was able to stand. Within two weeks, he was able to spar with his warrior companions. Derik left us, but before he went he offered us a gift. We said, “You have given us enough of a gift already, by destroying Jaldon.” Tears appeared in the great warrior’s eyes. “Clan of my birth, again you honor me.” He dried his eyes and extemporized a song. He sang it in an unearthly voice, and it was about our clan and his love for us. It was not long before clans throughout Dragon Pass were singing this song. Most of them changed it so that it was about their clans, but they still knew which clan the song was really about. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. When we twirled the Bull-roarer, about half of the enemy’s horses bolted in terror. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. The family and neighbors of a quarrelsome couple brought them before the ring. The couple were brought before the clan to listen to Jerernalda’s recitation of “The Badger and the Snake,” a tale that ridiculed pointless sparring and ends in disaster for all the animals in the forest. The couple were quiet as mice for a long time after. Strange and primitive warriors in wolf skins took two cows in a bold raid. We trapped wolves whenever possible. Whether we caught wolf-men or ordinary animals, none could say. Jorator spoke for the warriors when he said that they were stretched too thin, and that more fighters were needed. We sent Penterest on a mission to find the best warriors available. Theya returned from the Boskovi clan after her husband was killed by a troll as high as two men. Orlkarth, a trader of the Jenestni clan, warned us to be wary of another trader, Yaransor of the Vanstali clan. We said we would be wary of Yaransor in future. While exploring the wildlands of our own tula, our explorers found 10 cows worth of gems. Theya foretold that spirit-talkers would visit. We were raided by the Trolls. As soon as we began playing the Bagpipes of Ronskei, all the trollkin ran away. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Theya gave birth to a baby boy. We saw a rainbow; the people were cheered by this good omen. We thanked the gods with a sacrifice. The gods returned our gift. 1352 The god-talkers said we should explore distant parts of Dragon Pass this year. We were approached by Illator, a noble of Tarsh. He sought mercenaries for a northern war. We sent Kagradus and a quarter of our weaponthanes north to help King Arim. Our tribal queen, Arene, died in an ancient blood feud with the Lonisi. Theya woke to find her baby had turned blue and died. She had previously had to bury 2 infants and her husband. We held a divination. It was not clear how they had done it, but the god-talkers agreed that the Boskovi clan had sent some form of bad magic against Theya. A moot was convened to choose a new king. Both Orstanor and Rana were supported by many worthy sponsors. We nominated Jerernalda to take the throne. Rana was chosen to rule the Maboder tribe. Rana, of the Tanaharts, got ready for the rites of kingship. We decided to lend our magic to aid Rana. Rana attempted the rites of kingship, and was killed by mist that howled. After a time of mourning, we would have to pick a new candidate. Penterest returned from his recruiting mission with 6 new weaponthanes. A moot was convened to choose a new king. Both Desrada and Hindala were supported by many worthy sponsors. We nominated Jerernalda to take the throne. Fantarl spoke well, and Jerernalda was chosen to rule the Maboder tribe. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. When we twirled the Bull-roarer, about half of the enemy’s horses bolted in terror. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Eonislara of the Turtles asked us to help slay a walktapus that was stalking their tula. We did it in honor of Urox, foe of Chaos. We sent Robasart, along with 5 warriors. They did not find the walktapus. Jerernalda got ready for the rites of kingship. We decided to lend our magic to aid Jerernalda. Jerernalda attempted the rites of kingship, and was killed by an inhuman hero. After a time of mourning, we would have to pick a new candidate. Spirit-talkers showed up and asked if we needed anything from them. We did not want anything from them, but gave them hospitality. The old one told us we would be rewarded for our generosity. A moot was convened to choose a new king. Both Desrada and Orstanor were supported by many worthy sponsors. We nominated Jarolor to take the throne. Desrada was chosen as queen instead. Desrada, of the Tanaharts, got ready for the rites of kingship. We decided to lend our magic to aid Desrada. Desrada completed the rites of kingship. The celebration lasted for days. Eonislara did nothing but speak out against the ring. We threatened her with outlawry. She laughed and said that such an action would only prove our cowardice and lack of proper justice. She continued with a threat of her own: the people of our clan would rise up to defend her against such an unjust ruling. Ashart, a Lhankor Mhy god-talker from the Lonisi clan, told us there was a secret buried in one of our fields. After much digging, we found a Bowl of Plenty. The warriors returned from the campaign against the northern empire. There, they saw King Arim’s magical twins drop a range of hills on the Chaotic foe. They gathered goodly loot, and brought it back to us. To show thanks for our good luck, we sacrificed to Orlanth and other war gods. Yet again, Eonislara spent much time speaking out against the ring. The chieftain outlawed her. Although she had some supporters among the people, surprisingly few of them argued against the chieftain’s harsh decision. Penterest led a caravan to trade with the Jenestni. Voskandora, the ranking Uralda priestess of the Squat Oak clan, wanted to marry our melancholy young weaponthane Rostakos, but he was reluctant. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that we had unnecessarily disturbed them from their revels in the Halls of the Dead. Any fool could see that the clan ring had the right to make matches for its young people. The clan ring ordered him to submit to the match. The match was made, sealing an alliance between our two clans. The carls were pleased by his bride’s gift to the clan, but the weaponthanes felt sorry for him. Illator of Tarsh came to pay us for our warriors’ mercenary services, but tried to get us to take foreign coins instead of the cows he promised. We held Illator hostage, and sent his men to get the cows we were owed. Bandits blocked our caravan to the Jenestni clan. Penterest tried to bargain with them, but got nowhere. Penterest stood firm, keeping the bandits from taking anything. Penterest led a caravan to trade with the Jenestni. Orlkarth, trader of the Jenestni clan, died. He was noted for his long dispute with a rival trader, Yaransor of the Vanstali clan. 1353 The omens said our crafters would be plagued with misfortune this year. Fantarl’s knowledge of our customs was acknowledged to be of heroic level. The Red Foxes raided us. We twirled the Bull-roarer, and the enemy mounts became uncontrollable. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Mighty raiders of Tarsh rescued Illator, killing many of our people in so doing. Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Red Foxes violated our peace with their tribe. We demanded compensation from the Aranwyth. They offered us fair compensation, and we accepted it. A married couple were caught pilfering honey. We sent them into the forest to hunt down more honey. After weeks of exploring every stream, bog and thorn thicket, they located a promising hive. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. When we twirled the Bull-roarer, about half of the enemy’s horses bolted in terror. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. In the heat of the battle, the Bull-roarer’s string broke, and we never did find the blade. Uralda cultists offered to perform a ritual to benefit our herds. We let them share in our clan magic. They accepted our gift. They gathered up our cows and then walked around them seven times, whisking them with the Holy Tail. After performing a lowing dance, they pronounced the ritual complete. They departed, to the cheers and good wishes of the carls. Shamans came to offer us vengeance against the Red Foxes. We asked what it would cost to lame their horses. We tried to bargain with them, but they were fixed on their price. We declined their offer. Our tribe was beset by bandits. We lobbied the queen to act decisively against the bandits. She said she would make war on them. The bandits were soundly defeated. Those we did not slay on the spot fled like rippling squirrels, and were not seen again. We were raided by the Tusk Riders. The Tusk Riders were content to harass us with missile fire as we withdrew. Fantarl began the Lhankor Mhy Finds the Truth heroquest. Fantarl found himself in a strange and blasted place, where something was wrong with the wind. There were other Orlanthi there, dressed in an unfamiliar manner. He thought one of them must be Issaries. Fantarl said to Issaries, “I know you didn’t intend to sell the truth, so I will allow you to come along.” Issaries said, “I have my own reasons for going with you.” Then Fantarl saw a fearsome warrior who looked like Storm Bull. He said, “This way! There is Chaos to fight!” “Where?” said Urox, following along. Issaries took Fantarl and Storm Bull along a short cut. Along the way, Storm Bull had to fight many Chaos beasts. The worst was a gigantic Chaos thing, one whose name could only be pronounced by the dead. Fantarl let Storm Bull fight alone. Storm Bull defeated the Chaos creature, slaying it utterly. Issaries led the others through a short cut to the place where the truth might be found. They were challenged by foreigners who asked Fantarl to participate in a Meeting Contest. Fantarl and his companions attacked them. Storm Bull slew them easily, beckoning Fantarl and Issaries to follow on. Issaries took Fantarl to the right place. But then he got distracted, showing more interest in an argument between mastodons and sabretooth tigers than in taking Fantarl to the god that bought the truth. Fantarl said, “Without the truth, there can be no reconciliation.” Issaries told him that his words were wise. Issaries took Fantarl to find Grandbread, the god who was going to pound the truth into meal and eat it. Fantarl challenged Grandbread to a game of questions. The game went on so long that Grandbread became hungry and tried to eat the truth in its sharp and twisted form, but the truth poked a hole in his stomach and fell back out of him again. “Why did you do that?” Fantarl asked. Grandbread couldn’t answer without looking foolish, and thus lost the contest. Fantarl tried to put the truth back into its pure form. Fantarl put a leather sheet over his head and thought. But nothing came to mind. Then Issaries came in and asked a foolish question. Fantarl answered his question. Issaries left. When Fantarl looked at the truth, it wasn’t twisted any more! Storm Bull got bored and wandered away; Issaries bade farewell to Fantarl. Fantarl returned to the land of people from his successful quest. Our leaders suddenly knew many more things. Our cattle raid against the Boskovi was spotted. We exchanged missile fire with them, but never closed. Theya foretold that a rock would speak to us. 1354 The omens were contradictory. Theya was acclaimed a god-talker among god-talkers. A wounded Uroxi stumbled into our clan hall, claiming to have been ambushed by Chaos worshippers. We tended to him, and escorted him to the boundaries of our tula. He spit on the leader of the escort party and said that our ignorance gave comfort to Chaos. We scolded him for his poor manners. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. A thane from the Karandoli clan offered to recount “Ruthakran and His Chicken Bride.” It turned out to be a splendid rendition. A great rock in the back pastures of our tula told a farmer it was named Zenik Youf, and was the guardian spirit of the local hills. We began to sacrifice to the rock. Theya communed with Zenik Youf, but the spirit had lied to us. It fed deeply on her soul. Women found a talking fox in our woods. It wanted us to make an agreement not to hunt foxes or clear any more forest. We agreed to both conditions. The fox said that we would never know the full measure of disaster we had avoided. Endal came to ask us for a gift of luck and divine favor, reminding us that we owed his clan, the Bayberries, a favor. We gave more than the customary amount. Endal said that the Does were good friends, and that his people would not forget this. We were raided by the Turtles. Our forces eagerly followed the Burning Standard into battle. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Luckily, the Burning Standard wasn’t consumed by the flames. We stole 30 cows from the Turtles. 1355 The omens for exploring were good. Penterest’s ability at bargaining was acknowledged to be of heroic level. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. Robasart unhorsed and killed many of the raiders. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Gustand, a thane of the Tanahart clan, asked us for information about Baranwolf, chief of the Mule Deer clan. He reminded us that we owed his people a favor. We endeavored to answer his questions. Gustand asked us if Baranwolf was cautious or daring. We said, “Baranwolf is sometimes cautious, sometimes not.” Gustand departed, and thanked us for the information. Not long afterwards, he returned to our tula to withdraw his thanks. “The information you gave us was mistaken at best and deceitful at worst. Our relations with the Mule Deers have been sorely tested, and it is your careless words which are to blame.” Ordag, a hunter of the Karandoli clan, asked permission to hunt a great white stag on our land. We said he could hunt it in cooperation with our own hunters. They did not find the stag. Ordag blamed our people, and said he would have caught his quarry if not for our clumsiness. A delegation of Beastfolk came to us and warned us that Ironhoof would come back if we offended them further. We promised not to offend them further. They said we were saying the right words, but that only actions would ease their suspicions. Humakti warriors said we should give them permission to enter our tula and fight the undead. We granted it, and sacrificed to Humakt. They praised us as a wise and honorable clan. They tramped around our lands for many days, but did not find the creatures they were looking for. They were good guests, though, and did little to disturb us. The Trolls raided us. As soon as we began playing the Bagpipes of Ronskei, all the trollkin ran away. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. The Turtles stole 32 cows. Our cattle raid against the Turtles was spotted. We drove the Turtles from the battlefield, and were able to plunder their tula. Explorers met a bark-clad shaman, who made dire predictions, and said we should sacrifice to Kolat, the spirit-herding god. 1356 Our ancestors needed sacrifices so that they would be able to keep our clan magic strong. Our exploration party was taken prisoner by trolls and presented to their leader, Cragspider. “Our clan will promise never to come here again,” they said to her. “You have promised this before,” Cragspider said, and promptly incinerated the entire exploration party. Sendestra’s ability at animal husbandry was acknowledged to be of heroic level. Our explorers met foreign warriors who rode on monsters shaped like horses. We sought them out, and asked if they wanted to trade treasures. They did not, but thanked us (in an odd, foreign way) for asking. Theya foretold that a rock would falsely accuse a woman of secret murder. Eonistaran spoke for the warriors when he said that they were stretched too thin, and that more fighters were needed. We sent Penterest on a mission to find the best warriors available. We were raided by the Turtles. Derik had the chance to fight like a hero. Derik fought like a hero, but even heroes fail. He drove the Turtles about the battlefield, slaying as he went, but in the end their swords and spears brought him low. Although we held the field, we weren’t able to take any captives. Lismelder of the Brown Boar clan gave us five fine horses, and asked for our support in a matter that would soon come before the moot. We gave a reciprocal gift. At the moot, we supported the Taralings cause. The other clans agreed with us, and the Taralings won their case. We were raided by the Bachadi. The Bachadi were content to harass us with missile fire as we withdrew. Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Bachadi violated our peace with their tribe. We demanded compensation from the Aranwyth. They refused to discuss our case against them. We said that the Aranwyth should join us in making war on the Kheldon. The Aranwyth said that this would be a good thing, for their weaponthanes were restive and anxious to test themselves against a foe. When Fire season next came, they would join us in battle against the Kheldon. The Horse-Spawn raided us. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Ragged outlaws demanded hospitality, and threatened us with a rain of hail sent by Gagarth, the outlaw god. We refused them entry. They left, shaking their fists and repeating their threats. Even their children threatened to kill us. We were raided by the Trolls. As soon as we began playing the Bagpipes of Ronskei, all the trollkin ran away. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Arene began the Uralda’s Blessing heroquest. Arene went back to an ancient time, a time before Umath, before Yelm, and long before Orlanth, a time where everything was good for her four-legged people. But things were bad for the two-legged people, who were hungry, and asked Arene’s bulls for help. She found a high place in order to watch the two-legs as they left. The bulls chased the two-legs away, and the two-legs yelled and shrieked most piteously. The biting things came, and Arene could not protect her children from them. So she embarked on a journey to the home of the two-legs. First, she was attacked by biting things which were neither large nor small. Arene withstood the first attack of the biting things, but was wounded. Second, she was attacked by biting things with hollow teeth full of poison. Arene withstood the second attack of the biting things, but suffered further injuries. Third, she was attacked by biting things that lie in the water. Arene withstood the third attack of the biting things, but again her flesh was torn. Although it took every last bit of her strength, Arene made it to the tula of the two-legged people. Arene was glad she had watched for their trail when they were chased away by the bulls. Arene attempted to enter the two-leg camp, but the two-legged bulls tried to capture her and pen her up. She made the secret sign to Ernalda. Ernalda noticed the sign, and from the greeting Ernalda gave her, Uralda recognized Ernalda as her mother. “Life is almost good,” Ernalda said. “But my children have found this new thing called hunger, and I do not know what to do…” Arene said she had a plan. Arene headed back to her people, this time with some of Ernalda’s two-legged bulls to protect her. She told her bulls to tell the herd to get ready for a journey to the land of the two-legs. The bulls did not want to understand why. Arene brought the cows with her, but the bulls would not follow. “You have not suffered enough to ignore us like this,” the bulls said. She said to them, “See my wounds? This is what the two-legs will protect us from.” They said they feared the things that could cause such wounds. So they followed her all the way to the two-leg encampment, where they lived for some time. The bulls saw the two-legs cutting up and eating other cows, and were afraid. Arene said to them, “A little lost blood is nothing, when there is life to be given.” The bulls accepted what Arene said, and troubled her no more. Later, the cows complained that the two-legs were taking their milk, and Uralda explained that by treating the two-leg children as their own, there would always be two-legs. And, wherever there were two-legs, there would be fat and happy cows. This comforted them. Arene returned to the land of mortals, her quest successful despite her wounds. Arene searched through her belongings, and found a new thing there: a cow made of clay. We knew at once that this was a great treasure, a gift from Uralda. Thanes and priests from the Mule Deer clan accused Brenna of secret murder. We told them that their rock spirit was wrong. They were affronted at first, but gradually conceded that the spirits, even a spirit so great as their rock spirit, can sometimes be wrong. “We still think she did it,” they said, “but will seek further proof before demanding her death.” Penterest returned from his recruiting mission with 3 new weaponthanes. Bandits attacked our exploration party in the tula. Jarolor attacked, but was wounded and had to return home. We were raided by the Konthasos. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. 1357 Humakt warned us to raid before we were attacked ourselves. Sarotar’s ability at animal husbandry was acknowledged to be of heroic level. The Horse-Spawn raided us. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Enothea, the devotee of Eurmal on our clan ring, gave away a herd of our cows. We asked the Greenwings to give the cows back. They said that if we were really friends, we would not try to withdraw a gift. Jonrik led a delegation of carls to complain that we were too war-like, and that the crops were suffering as a result. We promised to make peace overtures to the Boskovi. Desrada, queen of our tribe, resigned the crown. Together with the Aranwyth, we declared war on the Kheldon. We argued that they should be given a chance to pay tribute before we made war on them. The others agreed that this was a good plan. Because we had suggested it, we were chosen to negotiate with the Kheldon king. He agreed that his tribe would pay tribute to our tribes. We distributed the tribute, and our tribe-mates cheered. Bandits blocked our caravan to the Bachad clan. Leikan attacked, but was wounded and had to return home. A moot was convened to choose a new king. Both Dorasa and Koreng were supported by many worthy sponsors. We nominated Kagradus to take the throne. Kagradus spoke well, and was chosen to rule the Maboder tribe. Kagradus got ready for the rites of kingship. We sacrificed to the gods so that Kagradus might perform well in the rite of kingship. Our priests said they could not tell if the gods had received our sacrifice. Kagradus completed the rites of kingship. The celebration lasted for days. We were raided by the Slapfoot Ducks. Our forces eagerly followed the Burning Standard into battle. We drove the Slapfoot Ducks off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Luckily, the Burning Standard wasn’t consumed by the flames. The Marsh Ducks raided us. Our forces eagerly followed the Burning Standard into battle. We drove the Marsh Ducks off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Luckily, the Burning Standard wasn’t consumed by the flames. We approached the Boskovi clan with an offer of peace. We proposed a reciprocal marriage between clans to seal our peace. They said that they would sooner intermarry with trolls than with us. And trolls were their ancient enemies. Penterest led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Jarolor convinced the Vanstali to create a new trading route. Uralda cultists sought aid in a great ceremony to prevent cattle sickness in a distant corner of Dragon Pass. We accepted their offer, and gave them gifts. They thanked us for the gifts. Carls and cottars argued over grazing land. Kagradus composed a poem about harmony between carls and cottars. Kagradus’s effort was not one of his best poems. One of our carls, Robarth, was attacked by two White Horse brothers. He slew one of them, who was named Burthalor. Robarth’s mother, Domasa, reminded us that this was part of a long-running feud between her family and the family of White Horses who once stole her mother’s prize stallion. Our clan leaders refrained from involving themselves in this private matter. A woman called Saraska Bright-Eyes came to us and said she would unify the tribes of Dragon Pass. We conducted a divination. The god-talkers said that the omens surrounding this Saraska Bright-Eyes were all bad. She did not have the favor of the gods; the prophecies she speaks of refer to someone who is not yet born. We promised her nothing. Vanstali traders offered us the massive “Belintar’s Book,” which they claimed had been stolen from the Pharaoh. We ended up being convinced it was worth more than their original offer. Enerin read the book carefully. The version of “Ernalda Feeds the Tribe” was new to us. Heortarl, of the Malani, came to our tribe’s moot with Saraska Bright-Eyes at his side. At the moot, Heortarl argued for a confederation of the tribes, with Saraska as the Queen of Dragon Pass. He said that all of the prophecies ordained it. We argued against this. Our words helped sway the other clans. We hooted down Saraska and Heortarl, scolding them for their rank foolishness. The Konthasos raided us. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. 1358 The god-talkers identified no omens, and this troubled them. Elendra, an Ernalda priestess of the Malani tribe, came to report that her tribe was plotting war against ours. Their king did so in support of Saraska. We thanked Elendra and prepared for an attack. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. Sarotar led a flanking maneuver against the riders, throwing them into disarray. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. The Malani attacked us, in support of Saraska’s new kingdom. We fought without quarter. Our warriors were second to none in ferocity and bravery. We felled many of our foes. We showed no mercy, and those of us who fell received none. We drew blood, and we shed it. Warriors of our clan were present when Saraska was brought down to meet her inevitable fate. They fired slingstones at her, and she was knocked to the ground. There Kagradus smashed his way through defending weaponthanes to throw himself upon Saraska, and crushed her head upon a boulder. When the warriors of Malani saw that the woman they fought for was slain, they fled the battlefield. We celebrated our victory, and cheered the death of this false leader. Shamans came to offer us vengeance against the Horse-Spawn. We asked what it would cost to lame their horses. We bargained them down to a fairer price, and they contacted the spirits for us. The Issaries priestess Sora Goodseller came to our clan and asked if we wished to buy a treasure known as the Whirlwind Jar. We traded Belintar’s Book for the jar. Carls and cottars argued over grazing land again. Kagradus composed a poem about harmony between carls and cottars. Both groups agreed that the poem was a fine one, and did them honor. They agreed to live up to its ideals in the future. Penterest led a caravan to trade with the Karandoli. The Tusk Riders raided us. Our forces eagerly followed the Burning Standard into battle. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. The Burning Standard was completely consumed by the flames. A couple from another clan offered to sell us the Farwalk Sandals. We tried to reduce the price they were asking. We convinced them to part with it for less. We put the Farwalk Sandals in a safe place. Outlaws blocked our caravan to the Karandoli clan. Penterest attacked, but was wounded and had to return home. We were raided by the Trolls. As soon as we began playing the Bagpipes of Ronskei, all the trollkin ran away. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Odayla cultists offered to perform a ritual to make the hunting better in our area. We accepted their offer, and said we owed them a favor. They thanked us, and said that the Karandoli, which many of them belonged to, would one day take us up on that favor. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. 1359 The god-talkers predicted that our crafters would have good luck this year. Explorers from our clan found the body of a dragonewt warrior lying in a stream bed. We decided to make magical armor from its hide. It was difficult to skin the dragonewt corpse without destroying the hide, but our tanners and magicians managed the task. We attuned the armor to Arene. The people complained Sendestra made bad trade deals on the clan’s behalf. The other ring members forbade her from making further trade deals. This seemed to mollify the people somewhat. Outlaws blocked our caravan to the Vanstali clan. Penterest attacked, but was wounded and had to return home. Outlaws blocked our emissary to the Slapfoot Duck clan. Leikan attacked, but our forces were routed. The Pharaoh’s sorcerers came to us looking for “Belintar’s Book,” a large tome which they say was stolen from the Pharaoh. We attacked them. With their strange implements, they slew some and wounded others. A stray mystic bolt thrown by one of the sorcerers destroyed Ernalda’s Oven. We drove them off, but at great cost. The Horse-Spawn raided us. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. The harvest was plentiful. The Karandoli raided us. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. A dragonewt came and asked for its old body back. We attacked him. It fought viciously, with weird and powerful magic. Our warriors fought back valiantly, with good Orlanth-granted magic. One of them was slain, but he managed to knock the dragonewt over as he fell, so that the others could pierce it with their swords. We decided to make magical armor from its hide. The dragonewt corpse was too difficult to skin, and we ruined it so that it could not be made into armor. Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Karandoli violated our peace with their tribe. We demanded compensation from the Aranwyth. They offered us fair compensation, and we accepted it. Theya foretold that we would be visited by dragon-kin. The Trolls raided us. As soon as we began playing the Bagpipes of Ronskei, all the trollkin ran away. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Ernaldinni of the Tanahart clan accused Jonrik of the Boskovi of unfair trade; both asked King Kagradus to adjudicate the case. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that Jonrik had in fact used a Listening Wind against Ernaldinni. Kagradus ruled in favor of Ernaldinni. Ernaldinni praised us for seeing with an unclouded eye, and gifted us with half of the horses we had ordered Jonrik to turn over to her. Jonrik’s face lost its usual smile, but he said nothing about our verdict. 1360 The god-talkers predicted that other clans would form bad opinions of us, no matter how generous we were. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Dragonewts eluded our patrols, and did strange things on our land. We tried to communicate with them. The dragonewts glanced at us briefly, then went back to their ritual. Two hours later, they left our lands. A delegation of Beastfolk came to us and warned us that Ironhoof would come back if we offended them further. We offered them compensation. The centaur told us that our payment to them was but a small step on the road to peace between our peoples. Then they departed. We stole 32 cows from the Turtles. We were raided by the Turtles. We drove the Turtles off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Theya had a recurring dream of a strange god-talker driving an ox cart with a statue of Orlanth. The god-talkers hastily prepared a ritual, sacrificing an oxcart and all the accoutrements from the dream. The strange god-talker gave the Greeting, and Theya replied. The two then exchanged gifts. King Kagradus was asked to resolve a dispute within the tribe. The Brown Boars contended that the Boskovi clan had been misusing the annual literacy tribute. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that the Boskovi had not in fact done the specific things the Brown Boar clan accused them of. Kagradus ruled in favor of the Boskovi. The harvest was plentiful. Enothea took ill, because someone had woven Chaos runes into her skirt. We sacrificed to Chalana Arroy. The Trolls raided us. As soon as we began playing the Bagpipes of Ronskei, all the trollkin ran away. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. After the battle, the bagpipes’ bladder had burst. We tried to repair it, but the magic was gone. 1361 The god-talkers said we needed to sacrifice to Vinga before we went exploring. Spirit-talkers showed up and chided us about not living up to Einarth Milk-Eyes’s prophecy yet. We asked them to explain themselves. The older one said that we were slow to heroquest. We thanked them and gave them hospitality before they left. Drenyan, a member of the Bayberry ring, came seeking help against a gigantic wyrm. We decided to send warriors. All but one of them returned from the hunt, battered and bloody. The wyrm had grabbed many warriors in its knife-rimmed jaws and escaped without harm. After many weeks at death’s door, Enothea recovered from the illness caused by the hexed skirt. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Theya foretold that we would be offered a trade we should not take. Fantarl, a Squat Oak thane, warned us that our alliance with his clan was in jeopardy. He said we were allied with too many clans. We gave him gifts, as a token of our commitment to his clan. Fantarl said he would take the gifts back to his clan leaders, who would take our generosity into consideration. Korlmhy spoke for the warriors when he said that they were stretched too thin, and that more fighters were needed. We sent Penterest on a mission to find the best warriors available. The Trolls raided us. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. A woman from the Brown Boar clan came to sell us thralls. We said, “We are opposed to the taking of thralls.” She said she would find buyers elsewhere. We learned that the Issaries trader Sora Goodseller succumbed to a wasting disease. Penterest returned from his recruiting mission with 6 new weaponthanes. 1362 Eurmal laughed during Sacred Time, and said that misfortune would plague us until we replaced at least half of our clan ring. Robasart was taken prisoner by the Karandoli; they said he had been poaching on their land. We offered them compensation, and said that it would not happen again. They said they would accept our offer. Ernaldinni attempted the heroquest of Orlanth and Aroka. Ernaldinni became as one with Orlanth. Ernalda told him that his nephew, Daga, was causing a drought and harming the people. Orlanth said that he would drive off or kill Daga. Ernaldinni fought against Daga. Ernaldinni took enough blows from Daga to complete the requirements of the myth, then fled. Ernaldinni gathered weapons, then other enemies attacked her. Ernaldinni danced the secret snake dance and seduced Gagarth. Gagarth gifted her with his Wind From Above. Ernaldinni slew trolls with her klanth, and took their weapon, the Darkwind. Ernaldinni blinded the Dark Woman by spitting Widebrew at her. Ernaldinni found another heroquester, who proposed to take the role of Orlanth’s brother Urox, saying it was his right. She told the Storm Bull to follow her. When Ernaldinni arrived to fight Aroka, she saw many Chaos creatures swarming towards her. The Storm Bull told her to go fight Aroka, leaving the Chaos creatures to him. And that is what Ernaldinni did. At last Ernaldinni found the lair of Aroka, and fought the dragon. Aroka tried to destroy Orlanth. The storm god released the Four Winds, blinding the dragon’s eyes. He released the Upper Wind, which dried out the enemy’s tongues. He captured Aroka’s breath inside the magical Sack of Winds and threw it away. Then Orlanth seized its jaws and tore the dragon asunder. Ernaldinni successfully completed the heroquest, and was cheered by all. Ernaldinni was strengthened, and appeared to be wiser as well. The Boskovi chief accused the Tanahart chief of luring weaponthanes away from his clan, and demanded compensation. King Kagradus was called upon to adjudicate the case. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that the weaponthanes had left Dorasor’s household on their own accord, because he had ridiculed their telling of the sacred myths. Kagradus ruled in favor of Dorasa. Dorasa praised the sagacity of our king, and gifted us with a set of silver rings. The Tusk Riders raided us. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Penterest led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Outlaws blocked our emissary to the Boskovi clan. Leikan attacked, but was wounded and had to return home. Orldag of the Turtle clan offered us gifts. We gave Orldag a reciprocal gift. He said we were very generous, and that he would say so to others. The harvest was plentiful. The Trolls raided us. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Three great Orlanthi wind lords came to bring us the joy of Orlanth. They asked for help in a task they would not speak of. We gave them warriors. A delegation of the clan’s leading men raised serious complaints against the job Jarolor was doing as chief. Jarolor’s clever oration reaffirmed his right to rule. The Turtles raided us. We drove the Turtles off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. 1363 The god-talkers said we needed to learn one of Ernalda’s blessings. The Red Foxes raided us. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Red Foxes violated our peace with their tribe. We said that the Aranwyth should join us in making war on the Kheldon. The Aranwyth said that this would be a good thing, for their weaponthanes were restive and anxious to test themselves against a foe. When Fire season next came, they would join us in battle against the Kheldon. Jareen of the Turtles asked us to help slay a walktapus that was stalking their tula. We did it as a favor to them. We sent Arene, along with 3 warriors. They found the walktapus hiding under some fallen trees. It made a weird screeching sound, then burst through the log’s rotten wood, hurling itself at the hunting party. The walktapus slew 2 of our warriors, then charged into the brush with surprising speed. Arene would not allow them to follow it, and called off the hunt. A dragonewt came and asked for its old body back. We gave it the scraps of skin that were left after our failed attempt to turn its hide into magical armor. Whether it was pleased or displeased, we could not tell. It departed without a further word. We approached the Boskovi clan with an offer of peace. We offered them payment. They were pleased by our generosity, and we ended the feud. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Penterest convinced the Boskovi to create a new trading route. We were raided by the Tusk Riders. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Bandits blocked our caravan to the White Horse clan. Leikan and his forces killed and scattered them. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Theya predicted that dragon-kin would wreak devastation on the clan. Bandits attacked our exploration party in the tula. Arene and her forces killed and scattered them. The Elmali holy warrior Orlaront approached us, seeking our support for his heroquest. We did as he asked, and lent our ritual support to his quest. Penterest led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. 1364 The god-talkers said that bees would bless our flowers and crops this year. A plague of snakes came upon us, upsetting the cattle and frightening the children. We sacrificed to Orlanth. The snakes went away. Theya thought that she had failed the clan by prophesying dragon-kin instead of snakes. We reminded her of all her accurate visions. The women of the clan complained about the satire by Urenstand of the Turtles, which referred to us as “Horse-Spawn Spawn.” Kagradus got nothing but abuse when he sought an apology from the Turtles. We sent Penterest with gifts to the Slapfoot Ducks. Priests of the Tanahart clan accused tricksters of the Bayberry of using trickster magic to direct a plague towards them. King Kagradus was called upon to adjudicate the case. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that the tricksters were guilty. We closely questioned the priests and tricksters. Enothea said that the tricksters were lying. Kagradus found in favor of the Tanahart priests. The priests said that the king’s verdict was righteous. The tricksters were dismayed, for the finding meant that they would be beaten. A dragon flew onto our tula, and laid waste to our steads. We sent Arene with gifts for the dragon. The dragon lowered its great head and looked Arene in the eye. Whether it was the sulfurous breath or the teeth the size of spear points, Arene flinched. The dragon contemptuously knocked her head over heels, then took our offering and flew off towards the Quivin Mountains. Eonislara sought divorce from Verlain. She said he had taken a mistress, and that she deserved to keep the bride price as a fine for adultery. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that the stink of adultery was on Verlain like fur on an alynx. We outlawed Verlain and paid the bride price. “My kin will say that you are just,” said Eonislara, as she left our tula to rejoin her kin among the Vanstali. The harvest was plentiful. We were raided by the Trolls. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Emissaries of the Heran clan sought our support in the Orlanth and Aroka heroquest. Many weeks later, news reached us of the disappointment at Orlanth’s holy place. The Heran’s Wind Lord was unable to complete the difficult quest, and the drought continued. Penterest convinced the Namoldings to create a new trading route. We heard that the Pharaoh was seeking his son by a troll wife, but had been unsuccessful. 1365 The god-talkers identified no omens, and this troubled them. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. The Brown Boars took some of our carls as thralls. We decided to buy the carls’ freedom back. We bargained well, and ended up paying them less than we had expected. The people were happy when our delegation returned with the captured carls. Theya began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. Daga, god of drought, attacked Theya. Theya survived Daga’s blows. Theya went to the elves and asked for their help. The elves accepted her, and gave her the seed she needed. The seed burrowed into the earth and led Theya to Maran Gor, who was keeping Barntar as her thrall. Theya convinced Maran Gor to release Barntar by telling her that without him, the people would starve. Theya found Esra and Uralda in the halls of the dead, held prisoner by Ty Kora Tek. She convinced Ty Kora Tek to let them go since they still had much life in them. Theya tried to leave the tunnel in the earth, but a terrible woman stood in the way. Theya invoked her kinship with the terrible woman, who agreed to let them pass. Theya took her boots off, and found earth from the realm of the gods inside. We put this earth in a jar, and considered it a great treasure. The Mule Deers raided us. The Mule Deer clan burned 3 steads. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. They burned 6 more steads. Penterest led a caravan to trade with the Boskovi. Women found a talking fox in our woods. It offered us luck in exchange for 26 cows. We decided to capture the fox and sacrifice it to the gods. Snaring the fox was harder than we expected, and cost us magic, but finally we trapped it and put it in a bag. We sacrificed it to Eurmal. We sent Penterest with gifts to the Turtles. The harvest was poor. We were raided by the Trolls. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. A band of very strange musicians asked for permission to play at our clan market. We accepted the offer. Bundalini’s All-Skeleton Band played, and people came from all over. We sought advantageous marriages. We did not arrange any. Penterest convinced the Bachadi to create a new trading route. We were raided by the Tusk Riders. We drove the Tusk Riders off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. 1366 The god-talkers predicted that other clans would form bad opinions of us, no matter how generous we were. Leikan convinced the Taralings to create a new trading route. Strange foreigners were found defiling one of Ernalda’s holy sheds. Our women conducted a ritual of purification. Of course, we killed the defilers. Verlain, of the Brown Boar clan, asked us to give him cattle, because we owed him a favor. We gave him more than he wanted. Verlain praised our generosity, and said that all of Dragon Pass would hear of it. The Greenwings raided us. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. And they took 10 of our women auxiliaries captive. We ransomed our prisoners from the Greenwings. Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Greenwings violated our peace with their tribe. We said that the Aranwyth should join us in making war on the Kheldon. The Aranwyth said that this would be a good thing, for their weaponthanes were restive and anxious to test themselves against a foe. When Fire season next came, they would join us in battle against the Kheldon. The Turtles raided us for 43 cows. The Turtles stole 17 cows. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. The ghosts of our dead warriors returned and told us that our actions shamed the clan. We scolded them for frightening their own people. They seemed chastened, and admitted that they were not sure exactly what offenses we had committed against the heritage of our clan. Shamans came to offer us vengeance against the Greenwings. We declined their offer. The harvest was plentiful. Orlaront spoke for the warriors when he said that they were stretched too thin, and that more fighters were needed. We sent Leikan on a mission to find the best warriors available. Theya foretold that a large army of horsemen would invade our tula. But she had visions of two possible outcomes. The god-talkers began preparations for a major ritual that would culminate just before the horsemen arrived. A week before the army of horsemen were to appear, the women performed the Ernalda’s Tapestry ritual. Despite the preparation, the women said that the ceremony did not go well. One of them recalled that it was Vevkoban the Chaos Horse who destroyed the oracle of Kev. As Theya had prophesied, a vast army of Horse-Spawn, hundreds strong, arrived at our tula. Theya went by herself to talk to them. When she told them that there was a Long Way Home, the Horse-Spawn all fell still. They questioned Theya closely. Finally, they gave her a soot-black mare, and left without attacking. Minara led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. 1367 Issaries said that if we acquired more treasures in the next two years, he would reward us richly in years to come. Jarolor led a caravan to trade with the Taralings. Humakti warriors said we should give them permission to enter our tula and fight the undead. We granted it, and sacrificed to Humakt. They praised us as a wise and honorable clan. They found spectres and ghouls everywhere, and put them to the sword. We knew that our lands were haunted, but had no idea just how much danger our people were in. We were overjoyed. Leikan returned from his recruiting mission with 9 new weaponthanes. Voskandora, the ranking Uralda priestess of the Lonisi clan, wanted to marry our melancholy young weaponthane Argrand, but he was reluctant. Kagradus spoke to Argrand, disputing his objections to the match. Argrand admitted that other marriages prospered despite great age differences. The match was made, sealing an alliance between our two clans. The people of both clans rejoiced. We were raided by the Turtles. Gardrostan had a chance to rally our warriors, who were about to flee. Several of our warriors ran away, but Gardrostan leapt towards the enemy before they could pursue. Gardrostan cut through Turtle shields and armor as if they were children’s toys, but there were too many of them, and Gardrostan fell. Fortunately, Gardrostan knew how to fight from the ground, and the Turtles could only wound him. We drove the Turtles off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Three young men all sought the hand of Yerestia, a young woman of our clan renowned for her cleverness and beauty. We married her to Darrold of the Squat Oak clan. He said we had earned the eternal gratitude of his clan. Yerestia wept and wailed, protesting that we should have married her to Vandarl of the Tanahart clan. A group of tricksters offered us a gift; it was a banner with the motion rune painted on it. We accepted the gift and tried to get the tricksters drunk. Just before they fell over, they said, “Keep this banner always. You will need it especially in 17 years. To use it properly, make sure one of you is king of a tribe; otherwise, destiny will pass you by. When the time comes, you must stop a war by turning it into stone and mortar. You must make a peace by conjuring a wolf. Then you must marry a horse. There is more to it, but it is for someone else to say.” Blue Jay warriors severely beat one of our carls, and hurt his wife. The ring said that Gustand should forswear vengeance. Gustand promised that he would end the cycle of provocation and retaliation. The people were cheered by this resolution. Leikan could not persuade the Tanaharts to create a new trading route. 1368 Our ancestors began the year in a good mood. Enothea, the devotee of Eurmal on our clan ring, gave away a herd of our cows. We asked the Gorinds to give the cows back. They said that they would take the favors and return the cows. Ernaldinni began the Humakt the Champion heroquest. Ernaldinni saw Eurmal stab Grandfather Mortal with the new thing called Death. She taunted Eurmal and took the sword called Death while Eurmal blustered. Ernaldinni’s family protested her plan to sever her ties to them. Ernaldinni said, “I must absolve my king of the heinous acts I will now do.” Ernaldinni severed her ties to her kin, becoming a stranger. Orlanth came to Humakt and demanded the Death weapon. Ernaldinni told Orlanth, “You will never rule Death.” Orlanth would not give up the sword, and so the two of them fought. Orlanth was not slain, but many of his thanes were. Orlanth came back and treated Ernaldinni like a cottar. Ernaldinni said that death was more important than safety and shelter. Ernaldinni refused to accept the cottar’s role, and so the two of them fought. Orlanth was not slain, but many of his carls were. Orlanth came back again, treating Ernaldinni like a carl. Ernaldinni said that her severing of clan ties couldn’t be reversed. They fought for four days and four nights. Orlanth was not slain, but many of his cottars and thralls were. Finally, Orlanth and Ernaldinni became tired beyond mortal reckoning, and could not go on. Those slain in the battle between Ernaldinni and Orlanth became undead creatures and attacked. It took a day and a night for Ernaldinni to destroy them all. Orlanth created a special position for her and told her they were partners. Then Orlanth humbly asked for the sword of Death. Ernaldinni gave Orlanth the sword. Ernaldinni returned to the land of mortals from her successful quest. From that day onward, everyone said that Ernaldinni was stronger, wiser, and closer to the gods. A moot was convened to choose a new king. Both Maniski and Koreng were supported by many worthy sponsors. We nominated Ernaldinni to take the throne. Koreng was chosen as king instead. Koreng, of the Bayberries, got ready for the rites of kingship. We celebrated with influential thanes of other clans. The thanes said that our generosity was less than that of many other clans. Koreng completed the rites of kingship. The celebration lasted for days. Insterid was accused of deliberately spreading disease. We conducted a divination. Our ancestral spirits said that she was deliberately spreading disease, and should be put to death. We outlawed her, then saw to it that one of our warriors ended her life. He hit her quickly, and she died without making a sound. Bandits blocked our caravan to the White Horse clan. Leikan tried to bargain with them, but got nowhere. Leikan and his forces killed and scattered them. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. The Trolls raided us. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Theya died giving birth. But she died with a smile on her face. Holding her baby, she said, “Her name is Jenela, and I wish that I could be there for her. But I know she will be well cared for. And I know she will grow up and have her own life, without the curse of vision. Ernalda has shown me this, and I thank her for that gift. And for Jenela.” We sacrificed to Ernalda in Theya’s honor. 1369 The god-talkers said we should explore distant parts of Dragon Pass this year. Ernaldinni’s combat skill was acknowledged to be of heroic level. Priestesses of Chalana Arroy said they would heal our sick and wounded in exchange for a future favor. We asked them to heal all of our sick and wounded. They did so, and the people rejoiced. The priestesses departed, reminding us that they would one day come back to ask for a favor in return. One of our carls was found dead, a victim of secret murder. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors groaned, and said that Rana was murdered by a half-wit warrior of the White Horse clan. We blamed the White Horse clan. We launched a legal claim against them. They denied involvement in Rana’s murder. The people were outraged by their lies. We raided them; the people roared for vengeance. We raided the White Horses. We drove the White Horses from the battlefield, and were able to plunder their tula. We took captives, and interrogated them until they confessed. One of their young men, Elusu, had committed the crime. We demanded that Elusu be turned over to us, but they said he was already dead — slain defending against our raid. When we brought this news back to our tula, the people celebrated. Blood justice had been done. The White Horses sent word that they held two of our warriors hostage. We paid the ransom they demanded. We sent Gardrostan with gifts to the Turtles. The Karandoli raided us. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Karandoli violated our peace with their tribe. We said that the Aranwyth should join us in making war on the Kheldon. The Aranwyth said that this would be a good thing, for their weaponthanes were restive and anxious to test themselves against a foe. When Fire season next came, they would join us in battle against the Kheldon. A milk-white calf was born into Orendal’s herd. We sacrificed it to Uralda, and gained her blessing. Our explorers found spirits at Mount Kero Fin, who claimed kinship with Orlanth. Helganna the Knowing said we should sacrifice to them. We built a shrine at our temple and encouraged the spirits to inhabit it. We performed a ceremony of dedication, but the spirits did not manifest themselves. All of the other clans in our tribe suffered bad harvests. Ernaldinni agreed to buy an old book from the Boskovi for eighty cows. We tried to renegotiate the price. They agreed to sell it to us at a fairer price. Inside the book, we found the myth of “Uralda’s Blessing.” While exploring the wildlands of our own tula, our explorers found 4 cows worth of fragments of a silver chain. The Trolls raided us. Gardrostan was killed in a duel against a great troll warrior We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. We sent Arene with gifts to the Turtles. The Turtles raided us. The Turtle clan burned 2 steads. Rastorlanth, a Turtle thane, challenged Umathkar to a javelin duel. Umathkar was fast. She threw first, and struck the arrogant Turtle down. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. They burned 2 more steads. Refugees came seeking aid. They said they had escaped from the Horse-Spawn. We conducted a divination ritual. The Knowing God told our priests that the horse nomads would come looking for their thralls, and would bring many warriors to help them. We adopted them as family. 1370 The omens indicated we should make a trip to a northwest kingdom. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Umathkar’s ability at animal husbandry was acknowledged to be of heroic level. Strange foreigners were found defiling one of Ernalda’s holy sheds. Our women conducted a ritual of purification. We conducted a ritual to try to divine Ernalda’s desires. The divination indicated regret for the inevitable fate of the defilers. With little joy, we slew them. The haughty horse nomads who called themselves Grazers, but we know as the Horse-Spawn, came to reclaim the refugees we had adopted. We told them we’d never seen their thralls. They called us liars, and again demanded the return of their thralls. We attacked them. Even these few horse-riders proved to be ferocious enemies. They fought with fiery arrows and lances. Their peculiar horses leapt through our tula like giant grasshoppers, falling among us where we least expected them. We killed the horses and their riders, but at great cost. They wore jewelry, which we added to our wealth. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Together with the Aranwyth, we declared war on the Kheldon. We argued that they should be given a chance to pay tribute before we made war on them. The others agreed that this was a good plan. Because we had suggested it, we were chosen to negotiate with the Kheldon queen. She agreed that her tribe would pay tribute to our tribes. We distributed the tribute, and our tribe-mates cheered. We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. Ernaldinni led a flanking maneuver against the riders, throwing them into disarray. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Our explorers went to the Orlanthi land of Tarsh. There they met an odd fellow who called himself the Prince of Masks, and said he would visit a magical catastrophe upon any clan in Dragon Pass we chose, in exchange for a gift of silver. We did not pursue the matter. Kestald, the willful child of well-liked carls, desecrated the Ernalda temple. The god-talkers conducted rites to restore the balance of the temple. We conducted another, more powerful ritual to make sure the temple was purified. The god-talkers said that the temple had been properly purified. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Swen, a thane of the Bayberry clan, asked us for the details of the “Orlanth the Justice Bringer” story. We told him what he wanted to know. He thanked us and departed. Orlev complained that his wife Hindala dishonored him by interrupting a duel with Garnath of the Karandoli. He was told that this was not a matter for the clan ring. The people were happy that the ring was wise enough not to involve itself in a petty dispute. As for Orlev and Garnath, their wives got together and made them promise not to bash each other. Leikan could not persuade the Slapfoot Ducks to create a new trading route. We sent Jarolor with gifts to the Turtles. We heard that the Pharaoh was seeking a half-forgotten myth. 1371 The god-talkers forecast that our market would be unprofitable this year. We were raided by the Tusk Riders. We drove the Tusk Riders off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Leikan began the heroquest of Issaries the Conciliator. Leikan found himself in a strange and blasted place, a place he should have recognized but did not. He found Lhankor Mhy among the Orlanthi there. Leikan said that if Lhankor Mhy would help him, he would help search for the Truth, which was missing. Lhankor Mhy agreed to this, after scolding Leikan for losing the Truth in the first place. Then Leikan saw a fearsome warrior who had to be Storm Bull. He said, “This way! There is Chaos to fight!” “Where?” said Urox, following along. Leikan searched for a very long time to find the worst part of the problem. People have forgotten how to make maps of the secret places, he thought. This realization led Leikan to dig in a hillside and uncover a passageway. The group crossed the big water by walking down the steps of the tunnel. Along the way, Storm Bull had to fight many Chaos beasts. The worst was a gigantic Chaos thing, one whose name could only be pronounced by the dead. Leikan let Storm Bull fight alone. Storm Bull defeated the Chaos creature, slaying it utterly. Leikan found the Digging Stick People, who were suffering because the Long-Noses and Big-Teeth were at war. Neither Lhankor Mhy or Storm Bull were interested in helping Leikan make peace between the warring peoples. He asked the Digging Stick People to give him a treasure. “But we are poor and wretched, and have nothing to give!” they cried. Nonetheless, they gave Leikan a Board of Nails, which would ward off bad thoughts. Leikan chose to go to the Long-Noses, no matter who followed. Storm Bull went along, but Lhankor Mhy went elsewhere. Leikan met with Oriska, the Long-Nose priestess, who said that she had no reason to make peace with the Big-Teeth. He went immediately to talk to the Big-Teeth. Leikan met with Paratur, the Big-Teeth war leader, who also said peace was impossible. Leikan asked the Knowing God for help, interrupting some pointless thing that Lhankor Mhy was doing. Lhankor Mhy said that Oriska was nothing but an overgrown cow, and Paratur just a big alynx. Then Leikan knew to tell Storm Bull to romance Oriska, and Oriska agreed to attend a peace parley. He told Storm Bull to kick Paratur, and Paratur agreed as well. Then Leikan had to decide what to propose to them. He said, “The Long-Noses must accept that some of them will be eaten.” He said, “The Big-Teeth must only attack weak and sick Long-Noses.” Oriska and Paratur made peace. Through this talking, they made trade. And with trade, traveling began again, and the world started to knit itself back into place. Leikan had done his work, and prepared to leave the realm of the gods. After the others left, Leikan was left alone with the tiger Paratur. Paratur purred, “Now, I never did promise not to eat you, did I?” Leikan offered to trade treasures. Paratur agreed as long as we did not offer him a Digging Stick People treasure. Paratur gave Leikan a necklace of stones that looked like tiger eyes and let him pass. The people celebrated Leikan’s successful enactment of the Issaries the Conciliator myth. People of the Turtle clan were there to welcome Leikan, and to voice their esteem for us. Acting as our emissary, Leikan sought an alliance with the White Horses. Leikan said to them, “We are both blessed by the gods, and our alliance would please them further.” Their chief, Dastandros, agreed that our two clans should be allies. “The favor of the gods is all well and good,” Dastandros said, “but there are practical reasons for this alliance, and this is why I favor it.” The young farmer Endal reported that his stead was haunted. Our priests and wise people went to the stead, spending many nights investigating the nature of the haunting. The Horse-Spawn raided us. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. We learned to speak to the ghost. It told us it had once served the dragons. We asked the spirit to serve us, as once it had served the dragon empire. The spirit was offended by our offer. It slew one of our horses, and galloped away on our charger’s spirit. The Trolls raided us. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Karandoli warriors raided us, driving off a small herd of cattle before we could even react. We sent a delegation to urge them to cease their raiding. They said that they wanted to get along with us, and would not raid us again. They returned the cows they had stolen. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. 1372 Issaries said that if we acquired more treasures in the next two years, he would reward us richly in years to come. Our expedition to Mount Kero Fin returned. Arene had a wondrous tale to tell. She and the others were exploring the snowy reaches of Orlanth’s mother, when they found themselves swept away to participate in an ancient battle, fighting against the forces of Lokamayadon, the traitorous priest who sought to eclipse Orlanth. Arene and the others fought against berserkers who opened doorways to the underworld with every blow they struck. Despite the confusing circumstances and difficult odds, our explorers fought well. Another great gust blew them back to Kero Fin, where wind spirits rewarded us. For a moment, they let us see the world from the top of Mount Kero Fin; they said we should look for a place we wanted to explore. They said that this view would give us a great advantage the next time we went wandering. Bandits blocked our caravan to the White Horse clan. Leikan attacked, but was wounded and had to return home. Ernaldness, a member of the Taraling ring, came seeking help against a gigantic wyrm. We tried to convince the wyrm to move along. Umathkar sought out the wyrm and told it that it was unfairly harming the people of clan Taraling. It agreed to go elsewhere, and thanked us for our courtesy. “You not as bad as humans dragons had to eat,” it said. Bandits blocked our caravan to the Lonisi clan. Minara attacked, but was wounded and had to return home. We were raided by the Konthasos. We drove the Konthasos off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. The Marsh Ducks raided us. We drove the Marsh Ducks off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Outlaws blocked our caravan to the Lonisi clan. Leikan attacked, but was wounded and had to return home. Our explorers met with Orlanthi of Tarsh. Like us, these people came to Dragon Pass after an invader conquered their homeland. In their case, the homeland was to the north of Dragon Pass, and their conquerors were the Chaotic Red Empire. The customs of these Tarshites were different from ours, but they still knew the most important Orlanthi laws. An expedition went to Tarsh and learned of military affairs in that land. King Ovartien Twinson had won the love of his people by mounting frequent raids against the part of the Lunar Empire called Sylila, thus enriching the Tarshite thanes. He allied with our hated foes, the Horse-Spawn, who the Tarshites called Grazers. The Horse-Spawn helped the Tarshites on their raids against the Lunars. While in Tarsh, Arene and the others engaged in many gambling contests. They lost much more than they won. Uralda cultists offered to perform a ritual to benefit our herds. We let them share in our clan magic. They thanked us for honoring their patron goddess. They gathered up our cows and then walked around them seven times, whisking them with the Holy Tail. After performing a lowing dance, they pronounced the ritual complete. They departed, to the cheers and good wishes of the carls. Ingard convinced the Lonisi to create a new trading route. Broyan, a trader of the Lonisi clan, offered to trade us two duck-folk eggs. We bargained well. We returned the eggs to Purefeather, leader of the Marsh Ducks. 1373 It was predicted that few children would be born this year. The Horse-Spawn raided us. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Yinkin cultists came and asked for our help in a heroquest to fight the god of wolves, Telmor. Ernaldinni agreed to play the role of Orlanth, and left with the Yinkini. We sent Leikan to the Taraling tula to try to buy a treasure from them. He bought the Flesh Man. The Yinkin heroquest was a failure. Ernaldinni was seriously wounded when the Serpentbeast Brotherhood attacked. The Greenwings raided us. We drove the Greenwings off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. We took 13 Greenwing auxiliaries captive. We were able to ransom the prisoners. We sent Minara to the White Horse tula to try to buy a treasure from them. She bought the Bronze Fleece. Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Greenwings violated our peace with their tribe. We said that the Aranwyth should join us in making war on the Kheldon. The Aranwyth said that they would not be pushed into an all-out war. We demanded compensation from the Aranwyth. They refused to discuss our case against them. We ignored this breach of the peace. Our warriors said that friends who smiled while stabbing you in the back were worse than no friends at all. Garstal and his family came from distant Esrolia, to ask for membership in our clan. We accepted them, and on that day they became Doe. People from the Stag Hearth clan came and said we should raid them, and they would contrive things so that we would kill their mad chieftain. We agreed to help them. We raided the Stag Hearths. We were driven off and had no opportunity to obtain booty. Their contrivance did not work. Their chieftain learned of their scheme, and submitted several members of his own ring to torture. Jarosar spoke for the warriors when he said that they were stretched too thin, and that more fighters were needed. We sent Leikan on a mission to find the best warriors available. We sent Minara with gifts to the Vanstali. The Trolls raided us. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. A large wild boar disturbed the pig-tenders, whose sows were sorely troubled by them. A great hunt for the boar was declared. A worthy opponent, it gored two of our men before it found a place of honor in our larder. 1374 The god-talkers predicted good calving. Our explorers went north to Tarsh and found out that Ovartien Twinson was still king of that land, still raiding the Lunars, and still enriching our Horse-Spawn foes. While in Tarsh, Arene participated in a juggling contest, and beat all comers. She was rewarded with several silver torcs, and with a magical treasure. The treasure was the Veil of Chalana Arroy, which would soothe hearts torn by the lust for vengeance. Minara led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. The Horse-Spawn raided us. We exchanged missile fire with them, but never closed. Enerin began the Chalana Arroy Heals the Scars heroquest. Enerin found herself in a strange palace, where foreigners requested her healing aid. She healed them, and then went to heal the wounded Storm People. She healed the foreign people. One of the foreigners blocked Enerin’s way and threatened to kill her. She cured the foreigner of his foreignness, and so he protected Enerin. He said his name was Elmal. Enerin healed many storm people, but was then confronted with Orlanth, who wanted to kill her. Enerin healed his wounded judgment; he made her one of his attendants. The Unholy Trio appeared in the world and caused trouble at Orlanth’s court. Orlanth’s brother, Kolat, argued with them. So Malia first used her terrible gift, the scar of disease, and made Kolat unwell. Enerin defeated Malia without hurting her, and healed Kolat. The Unholy Trio embroiled the world in war. Storm Bull decided to kill all of them, starting with his brother, Ragnaglar. They fought; Urox wounded Ragnaglar and was ready to kill him. She could not understand the mystery of winning without making the other person lose. Enerin threw herself between the two combatants. Storm Bull would not relent. Storm Bull could not be persuaded that Chaos could be healed. Enerin stood aside, and let him kill Ragnaglar. King Heort was killed in the war against Chaos, and Humakt tried to prevent Enerin from healing him. Enerin healed the scar of certitude under Humakt’s tongue. She then healed King Heort, who kept people alive while Chalana Arroy and the other gods went to hell to heal Yelm and the world. Enerin returned to the land of mortals from her successful quest. Thereafter, we knew that our healing abilities would be great. Leikan returned from his recruiting mission with 11 new weaponthanes. A plague of snakes came upon us, upsetting the cattle and frightening the children. We sacrificed to Ernalda, the Earth Mother. The snakes went away. Minara led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Emissaries of the Brown Boar clan sought our support in the Orlanth and Aroka heroquest. We sent many worshippers to the ritual. Our worshippers enjoyed their lengthy pilgrimage to Orlanth’s holy place. The Brown Boar’s Wind Lord was unable to complete the difficult quest, and their elders lamented what would doubtless be a continuing drought. The harvest was plentiful. Ferena, daughter of Iskalli and Engarna, went missing. Her parents thought she was at Clan Konthasos, in the company of a former suitor, Loricon. We went to the Konthasos and asked Ferena if it was her will to marry Loricon. She said it was, so we allowed it, although it was contrary to tradition. We sent Arene with gifts to the Turtles. We sent Arene with gifts to the Vanstali. They said that we were their friends, and that we could call on them in the future if we needed to. 1375 The omens said our crafters would be plagued with misfortune this year. A gigantic Chaos creature appeared on the boundaries of our tula. It ate some sheep, and scared away the shepherds. We sacrificed to Urox for aid against Chaos. While we prepared the sacrifices, the Chaos creature ate some of our cows. The god-talkers said the signs were good; Urox would aid us in our battle. We sent for Uroxi warriors. While we waited for word to get to them, the Chaos creature ate some of our horses. 2 great holy warriors of Urox came to aid us. We sought the aid of other clans. While we were talking to other chieftains, the Chaos creature ate some of our children. No other clan agreed to help us. We attacked the creature. We slew the creature. It decomposed over a matter of days, and we had to keep everyone inside their steads. Where it died, nothing would grow. Brandgor of the Boskovi clan lodged a legal claim against us, demanding many cows as compensation for the death of his nephew, who was slain by Orlmar Half-foot. We paid him a just wergild, though less than he had asked. The Horse-Spawn raided us. Ingard led a flanking maneuver against the riders, throwing them into disarray. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Drought struck our lands. The spectre of starvation hovered over us. We went with Orlanth to help him free Heler from the dragon’s maw. She failed to seduce Gagarth. Gagarth buffeted Ernaldinni with the awesome Wind From Above. She returned a punch that stunned Gagarth, and Ernaldinni took the Wind From Above. The drought ended. Orlanth triumphed. Freed, Heler broke the clouds and showered our lands with blessed rain. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Frithorf, a thane of the Stag Hearth clan, asked us for information about Baranwolf, chief of the Mule Deer clan. He reminded us that we owed his people a favor. We offered him a gift instead of information. “I cannot refuse this gift, even though it is not what I would have preferred to get,” said Frithorf. After he left, the weaponthanes complained that we had given him too much wealth. We sent Barngradus with gifts to the Konthasos. We were raided by the Trolls. Ingard slew a huge troll berserker that was killing our cattle. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. The Brown Boars took some of our carls as thralls. We decided to buy the carls’ freedom back. We bargained well, and ended up paying them less than we had expected. The people were happy when our delegation returned with the captured carls. Arene and the others fought against armored foes who fought in tight formation. Despite the confusing circumstances and difficult odds, our explorers fought well. Another great gust blew them back to Kero Fin, where wind spirits rewarded us. They pledged to come to our aid and fight on our behalf against any other clan of Dragon Pass. They would fight one battle only, but would come whenever we called. Ortossi came to ask us for a gift of luck and divine favor, reminding us that we owed his clan, the Brown Boars, a favor. We gave more than the customary amount. Ortossi said that the Does were good friends, and that his people would not forget this. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. 1376 The spirits of our ancestors were peevish because we were stuck in our ways and not learning anything new. We sent Minara to the Vanstali tula to try to buy a treasure from them. She bought the Silver Tongue. The Greenwings challenged us and others to a cooking contest. We volunteered to serve as judges. We chose the deserving clan, the Greenwings. Arnbord began the Elmal Guards the Stead heroquest. Arnbord was unable to enter the realm of the gods. Selemal, the famous poet of the Stag Hearth clan, passed quietly in his sleep. Koreng, king of our tribe, resigned the crown. A moot was convened to choose a new king. Both Dorasa and Harnkorl were supported by many worthy sponsors. We nominated Ernaldinni to take the throne. Ernaldinni spoke well, and was chosen to rule the Maboder tribe. Ernaldinni got ready for the rites of kingship. We sacrificed to the gods so that Ernaldinni might perform well in the rite of kingship. Our priests said the gods were pleased with our sacrifice. Ernaldinni completed the rites of kingship. The celebration lasted for days. A beautiful woman appeared in the woods. Some said that she ensnared our men. We carefully questioned the menfolk to see if any of them had been with her. All of the menfolk steadfastly denied any contact with the woman of the woods. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Olende died of a terrible curse when plants sprouted from his body. We cast a curse-lifting spell on all of the men of the clan. The curse was not repeated. Minara led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. The Horse-Spawn raided us. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the Bachadi. The Uroxi warrior Orendal Red-Eye tried to kill Frithorf’s cattle, claiming they were broo-infested. Not knowing Orendal well, we tried to determine if his judgment could be trusted. After some questioning, we saw that Orendal had only poor evidence to back up his claim. We agreed with him, and destroyed the herd. 1377 The clan’s magic was not as strong as usual this year. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the Slapfoot Ducks. Horse-spawn women came to tell our priestesses that they had a new leader, a woman with earth powers who was called the Feathered Horse Queen. We gave them gifts. They said we would be glad we had gifted them. After they were gone, the warriors said we should not have paid such tribute to an enemy. We found White Horse hunters poaching deep within our territory. To demonstrate our generosity, we provided them with food, drink, and song. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the Slapfoot Ducks. Bandits blocked our caravan to the Taraling clan. Minara and her forces killed and scattered them. We sent Minara to the Taraling tula to try to buy a treasure from them. She was unable to buy Quivin’s Torc. Three great Orlanthi wind lords came to bring us the joy of Orlanth. They asked for help in a task they would not speak of. We gave them warriors. A bold young warrior named Temertain sought a duel with a champion of our clan. We told Temertain that we would permit only a duel to first blood. He insulted our bravery. We held to our original decision. Temertain left without wetting his blade on our blood. The spirits of our ancestors appeared and offered us a blessing to help us fulfill our destiny. “Make our queen wiser still,” we asked. “A wise request begets wisdom,” said our ancestors, who surrounded Ernaldinni, our queen, then disappeared. Our queen appeared to swoon, but when she awoke, she declared herself stronger and more clear-headed than ever. Many of our cows became sick. We sacrificed to Uralda, the cow mother. The sick cows were healed by Uralda’s grace. Lismelder of the Turtles asked us to help slay a walktapus that was stalking their tula. We did it in honor of Urox, foe of Chaos. We sent Arene, along with 8 warriors. They found the walktapus hiding under some fallen trees. It made a weird screeching sound, then burst through the log’s rotten wood, hurling itself at the hunting party. Our warriors fell upon it, hacking furiously. We cut it to bits. Then Turtle sages carefully burned each of the pieces, saying that the creatures were thought to be able to regrow themselves. The sages made sure that no one breathed in the oily smoke from the burning creature’s meat. Our god-talkers said that Urox would be pleased by this action undertaken in his name. We sent Leikan to the Boskovi tula to try to buy a treasure from them. He bought Eurmal’s Shield. 1378 The omens said that Chalana Arroy would reward us if we refrained from raiding this year. A beautiful woman appeared in the woods. Some said that she ensnared our men. We sent searchers to drive her away. We banished her from our lands. Someone put a crude effigy in the middle of the temple of Orlanth. We dedicated the statue to Eurmal, moving it to its own sacred hut. Enothea said Eurmal was pleased with his new shrine, and would continue to overcome the skepticism of others for us, at least for a while. Arnbord began the Elmal Guards the Stead heroquest. Orlanth left on his great quest, and Arnbord stayed to guard the stead. A Chaos creature called the Eater of Skin came and attacked. Arnbord thrust his spear at it. The spear pierced the creature’s eye, and it screamed in anger. The creature ripped at Arnbord with one of its seven mouths, and tore open Arnbord’s chest. Before the creature could remove the spear, it groaned and died; the people rejoiced. Our worshippers, back in the ritual ground, had a chance to help Arnbord knit himself back together. We gave of our tears, weeping and wailing, so that our tears soaked the ritual ground. Arnbord knitted himself back together and everyone, whether from the Doe clan or the Storm Tribe, rejoiced. More Chaos enemies came, including the Author of Sores. Arnbord chopped at her legs. The creature caused the scalp to crawl from Arnbord’s head, and then bite at him as if it were a rabid animal. Arnbord clubbed her about the head. Her head came off, but leapt forward and tore at Arnbord’s chest. Soon the creature’s head stopped moving, and then the rest of her did, too. The Author of Sores was slain, and the people cheered. Once again, our worshippers were given a chance to help Arnbord knit himself back together. We gave of our tears, weeping and wailing, so that our tears soaked the ritual ground. Arnbord knitted himself back together and everyone, whether from the Doe clan or the Storm Tribe, rejoiced. Then came the Maker of Bad Growth, another Chaos enemy. Arnbord ran around the Maker of Bad Growth on a hallowed horse. The creature became dizzy, and its brains turned to pink ooze and dripped out of its ears. It jumped on top of Arnbord’s horse, smothering him. Arnbord burned him with his brightness. The creature caused Arnbord’s face to swell until it fell from the front of his skull, and writhed upon the ground. But Arnbord’s brightness burned the Maker of Bad Growth into runny yellow fat, and the people celebrated this victory. For the third time, our worshippers were given a chance to help Arnbord knit himself back together. We gave of our tears, weeping and wailing, so that our tears soaked the ritual ground. Arnbord knitted himself back together and everyone, whether from the Doe clan or the Storm Tribe, rejoiced. Arnbord was approached by a lost love, who urged him to run away, and forget guarding the Storm Tribe’s stead. Arnbord said, “Orlanth did not steal my pride. He awakened it.” His old love revealed itself as the Chaos creature called the Teller of Lies, and said, “Curse your eternal steadfastness, Elmal!” In frustration, it departed. A blind oracle told Arnbord that Orlanth was dead, and that he should take the crown of the Storm Tribe, in order to protect it. Arnbord said, “I would not be loyal to Orlanth if I believed him so easily defeated.” Unable to shake Arnbord’s steadfast loyalty, the Teller of Lies could do nothing but slink away. The next day, the Emperor came, but this time Arnbord knew his visitor was the Teller of Lies. Arnbord gave the Teller of Lies a magnificent horse, and said it housed his soul. Arnbord promised to serve Chaos. Teller of Lies was so pleased, and so hungry, that it devoured the horse Arnbord had given him. But Arnbord had tricked it; the horse was not his soul, but was also Arnbord in his bright entirety. Now Arnbord was inside the Teller of Lies, and could see that inside the Chaos servant was Nothing. Its ever-shifting forms masked only emptiness. Armed with this knowledge, Elmal tore it apart from the inside, using the sharpened edges of the shield Orlanth had given him. And the Teller of Lies, revealed as Nothing, was destroyed. Our clan leaders said they all felt stronger and wiser. Orlgard died of a terrible curse when plants sprouted from his body. We cast a curse-lifting spell on all of the men of the clan. 3 carls died. One of them was married; so we knew that he had committed adultery with the mysterious woman of the woods. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Endal spoke for the warriors when he said that they were stretched too thin, and that more fighters were needed. We sent Leikan on a mission to find the best warriors available. We sent Arene with gifts to the Konthasos. We were raided by the Tusk Riders. We drove the Tusk Riders off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Farnan, one of our senior weaponthanes, collapsed in the clan market when confronted with the skull of a horse. A shaman had once told him that he would die the day he was shown the skull of a horse. We decided to trade for the skull that the trader Orlena had brought to our clan market. “I will accept any other treasure in its stead,” said Orlena. Orlena accepted the treasure we offered, and we took possession of the horse skull. The moment we did so, Farnan cried out and died. The people were mournful and frightened, but that night several of our god-talkers dreamt that the Horse Skull would one day enable one of us to become King of Dragon Pass, and that Farnan’s spirit would then be feasted in the Halls of the Dead. Leikan returned from his recruiting mission with 9 new weaponthanes. Outlaws blocked our caravan to the Turtle clan. Minara attacked, but our forces were routed. We were raided by the Trolls. Arene won a great duel against a huge troll warrior that would have killed many of our warriors. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. 1379 The gods blessed our clan with extra magic this year. Hospitality was nearly broken when Sartar, member of a delegation of Boskovi, made remarks about Sendestra, the sister of our weaponthane Jenesta. We apologized for Jenesta’s behavior, but the Boskovi said it was not sincere, and departed. Queen Ernaldinni was asked to resolve a dispute within the tribe. The Taralings accused the Bayberry clan of not treating them like a proper tribe-mate. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that the Bayberries had not in fact done the specific things the Taraling clan accused them of. Ernaldinni ruled in favor of the Bayberries. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Outlaws blocked our caravan to the Boskovi clan. Minara and her forces killed and scattered them. We sent Minara to the Boskovi tula to try to buy a treasure from them. She bought the Metal Mule. A woman from the Brown Boar clan came to sell us thralls. We bought 5 thralls. Then we freed them to become cottars in our clan. We sent Ingard with gifts to the Konthasos. They were pleased with our generosity. They said that we were their friends, and that we could call on them in the future if we needed to. Traders told us that the Elves raided the Gorind clan, doing great harm to them. We helped them with gifts. Their gratitude was unrestrained. Our holy people saw great scars appear on the surface of the Chaotic red moon. Because the moon is of Chaos, we sacrificed to Urox, foe of Chaos. The Trolls raided us. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. 1380 All of the omens were unlucky. Minara led a caravan to trade with the Lonisi. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Odayla cultists offered to perform a ritual to make the hunting better in our area. We accepted their offer, and gave them gifts. They thanked us for the gifts and departed, telling us that we would know when the ritual had been completed when the forest filled with elk. A beautiful woman appeared in the woods. Some said that she ensnared our men. We sent searchers to drive her away. We banished her from our lands. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. A lone wanderer arrived, full of crazy tales. We sacrificed to Chalana Arroy to drive out the bad spirits, but they killed him. We sent Leikan to the Bachad tula to try to buy a treasure from them. He bought Urgrain’s Coin. Garnath died of a terrible curse when plants sprouted from his body. We cast a curse-lifting spell on all of the men of the clan. 3 carls died. One of them was married; so we knew that he had committed adultery with the mysterious woman of the woods. Thanes and priests from the Mule Deer clan accused Marlesta of secret murder. We conducted a divination. The signs showed that Marlesta was innocent. We told them that their rock spirit was wrong. They were affronted at first, but gradually conceded that the spirits, even a spirit so great as their rock spirit, can sometimes be wrong. “We still think she did it,” they said, “but will seek further proof before demanding her death.” Orlgard of the Tanahart clan came before us, bearing gifts and seeking an alliance. We agreed to ally with the Tanaharts. Acting as our emissary, Leikan sought an alliance with the Boskovi. They were pleased with the generous gifts we sent. Leikan said to them, “It would be generous of you to help us in a time of need.” Their chief, Dorasor, agreed that our two clans should be allies. “Generosity is the prerogative of chiefs and kings,” Dorasor said, “and I am glad to extend to you our bounty and protection.” 1381 The god-talkers predicted that our crafters would have good luck this year. A war broke out between the Aranwyth and Kheldon tribes, causing disruption of trade. We offered to broker peace between the warring tribes. Jarolor persuaded the king of the Aranwyth to attend a peace parley. Leikan convinced the queen of the Kheldon that it was time to stop the war. Arene and the others fought against fighters with fiery spears, whose magic pinned them to the ground. Acting as our emissary, Leikan sought an alliance with the Namoldings. They were pleased with the generous gifts we sent. Leikan said to them, “You will profit greatly from an alliance.” Their chief, Rostandos, agreed that our two clans should be allies. “After carefully considering the advantages and disadvantages of such an arrangement,” Rostandos said, “I can only conclude that we would benefit by it.” Humakti warriors said we should give them permission to enter our tula and fight the undead. We granted it, and sacrificed to Humakt. They praised us as a wise and honorable clan. They found spectres and ghouls everywhere, and put them to the sword. We knew that our lands were haunted, but had no idea just how much danger our people were in. We were overjoyed. We served as intermediaries at peace negotiations between the kings of the Aranwyth and Kheldon tribes, Garrath and Arkilla. We told them, “We should all build a town together, so all will prosper.” Garrath was silent for a long time. Then he said, “It is a very strange idea, but for some reason I think I want to agree to it.” Arkilla was also puzzled, but finally agreed. “It is a new thing, and we have learned to distrust new things. But you make it seem as if there is little risk in trying.” Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Ernaldinni began the Storm Tribe heroquest. Ernaldinni was told by Ernalda to make a tribe, so that she could challenge the Emperor. But the Doubting Wheel rolled up and told Ernaldinni not to make a tribe. She said, “I will catch you, and my wife will make you into soup.” She caught it, and took it home to Ernalda, who cooked it up in a soup, where it became small and silver. “It is nothing to be afraid of now,” Ernalda said. “Take it and use it to make the tribe.” Ernaldinni found Yinkin, who said he would join the tribe if Ernaldinni could defeat the champions of the Plant Tribe. Ernaldinni fought both of them. She tore off the many feet of Rustling Veins, which gave it sustenance. She blunted the many swords of Sharp Green, which gave it power. The Plant Tribe was defeated, and Yinkin said that his Cat Clan would join the Storm Tribe, provided it finds a way to remember its good laws. Ernaldinni found the Knowing God trapped inside a great cube. She recited a poem no one had heard before. The poem caused the cube to crumble, and the Knowing God was freed. The Knowing God agreed to make the Marks On Bark Clan part of the Storm Tribe, so long as this new tribe had fierce warriors. Ernaldinni found Vadrus, who had decided to fight Yinkin and his Cat Clan. She challenged Vadrus to a contest of strength. “Do not waste my time, younger brother,” Vadrus said. “I have a cat to skin.” Ernaldinni said, “If we had a tribe, you could punish him without hurting him.” “But I want to hurt him!” Vadrus exclaimed, incredulously. Ernaldinni said, “I would sooner see you harmed than Yinkin.” And the two of them fought. Ernaldinni defeated Vadrus after a tremendous brawl. Because this was a time when there was no death in the world, Ernaldinni did not kill Vadrus, and did not commit the sin of kinslaying. Still, this did not encourage Vadrus to join Ernaldinni’s new tribe. Ernaldinni found more chieftains to bring their clans to the confederation moot, but when they got there, they fell to fighting, and blamed her for making contradictory promises. Ernalda brought her implements of tribal regalia. She brought the Chest of Torcs, with which she could gift the clan leaders. She brought the Hall of Understanding, where people would settle their differences by talking them out. She brought the Crown of Authority, which made people respect her sacral powers and pledge allegiance to her. Most of the clans agreed to make the tribe, but there were still some who were stubborn. Then warriors of the Night Tribe came and attacked the quarrelling clans. Ernaldinni led the fight against the Night People. Everyone banded together to fight these hungry enemies. After they defeated the night warriors, they acclaimed Ernaldinni as their king. Ernaldinni returned to the land of mortals, her quest successful. Our friends in the other clans said that this heroquest would be well-remembered when our next king was chosen. With the kings of the Aranwyth and Kheldon tribes at our side, we embarked on the building of a town. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors told us that they had heard whisperings from the realm of the gods. Our little town was destined to grow into a great city, one that would always be remembered in history. The founders of that town were also destined for greatness, if they made the right decisions in the seasons to come. Our next challenge would be to settle a war between men and wolf-men. We conducted a divination to pick a name for the town, which suggested we call it Ironwall. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Thanes from an Elmal clan came to complain that our thanes disrupted their holy ceremonies and lobbed dirt clods at their temple. We offered them compensation. They were satisfied by our offer, and said that they considered the claim settled. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the Lonisi. Acting as our emissary, Minara sought an alliance with the Karandoli. Minara said to them, “It would be generous of you to help us in a time of need.” Their chief, Orlev, agreed that our two clans should be allies. “Generosity is the prerogative of chiefs and kings,” Orlev said, “and I am glad to extend to you our bounty and protection.” Progress on the building of our new town continued. We decided to hire shamans to attract benign spirits to inhabit the town. Shamans came and said they would attract benign spirits for the low price of fifteen cows. We accepted the arrangement. They performed many secret ceremonies at night in the heart of the unfinished town, obscured by darkness and smoke. After six days and six nights, they said that the town was now home to many good spirits. Korstardos of the Karandoli clan offered us gifts. We gave Korstardos a reciprocal gift. He said we were very generous, and that he would say so to others. Ironwall was completed, and the people of the various tribes were happy. We chose to embark on the Issaries the Conciliator heroquest. He said, “The Long-Noses must accept that some of them will be eaten.” He said, “The Big-Teeth must only attack weak and sick Long-Noses.” He said, “The Big-Teeth must trade back the bones of the dead Long-Noses.” Oriska and Paratur made peace. There were Horse-Spawn there to welcome Leikan, and to voice their esteem for us. The god-talkers said that Issaries’ blessings would shower on the town like warm Sea season rains. People from outside the clan said we were wise and clever to gain the blessing of the Trading God through his heroquest. We found a very old cart with dragon insignia on it. Our god-talkers tested it to see if it was magical. They said it had no magic in it. We put it on display. Clans who once cooperated with dragons admired our new treasure. Those who had fought against dragons in the past were displeased with us. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. The Trolls raided us. Barngradus’s lightning bolts made him a target for the trolls, and he was wounded by a hurled boulder. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. 1382 The god-talkers said that bees would bless our flowers and crops this year. Minara led a caravan to trade with the Slapfoot Ducks. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Acting as our emissary, Minara sought an alliance with the Vanstali. They were pleased with the generous gifts we sent. Minara said to them, “You will profit greatly from an alliance.” Their chief, Karendra, declined our offer. “What an absurd proposition,” Karendra laughed. “Compared to us, your herds are small! We seek a rich partner, not a poor cousin.” We sacrificed to the gods for protection from bad spirits. The god-talkers said the signs were good. The gods would protect us against bad spirits. We sent Leikan with gifts to the Mule Deers. They were pleased with our generosity. Asborn, thane of the Eagle clan, invited us to accompany him on a raid against the Telmori wolf-folk. We offered to make peace between the Eagles and Telmori. His face hardened. “Peace is for ponds and stalks of wheat. We are men, and live for war.” We declined his invitation. He said we were entitled to refuse, but the smirk of contempt on his face showed that he thought worse of us. We sought peace with the Telmori. Their leaders were reluctant at first, but before long we were teaching them great poems, and they were teaching us how to howl. Minara led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Minara led a caravan to trade with the Namoldings. Foul weather turned back our trading caravan bound for the Taraling clan. The Trolls raided us. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Ortossi, a thane of the Taraling clan, asked us for the details of the “The Contests” story. We told him what he wanted to know. He thanked us and departed. We learned that the Colymar and Malani tribes were fighting a losing war with the Telmori. We sent a delegation to tell Hauberk Jon we would make peace with the Telmori on his behalf. Ernaldinni and a coterie of warriors made their way to Hauberk Jon’s last known encampment. They hid behind rocks as Telmori warriors passed by. Ernaldinni found Hauberk Jon. Ernaldinni said to him, “We made peace between warring tribes; we can make peace with the Telmori.” “It is harder to make peace with inhuman enemies than Orlanthi,” Hauberk Jon said, “but, then again, Garrath and Arkilla are themselves said to be as hungry and clever as wolves.” He said he would trust us to try to make peace overtures on his behalf. Ernaldinni, accompanied by warriors, found the Telmori encampment and entered it, interrupting their funeral rites. Ernaldinni spoke calmly and reasonably, drawing on the magic of the motion rune. The Telmori growled at us. Some of their chieftains and shamans ran up and bit Ernaldinni and her companions, drawing blood. But they did not kill Ernaldinni. Slowly, Ernaldinni won their trust, and they said they would make peace with us, if Ernaldinni could revive their slain chieftain. The Telmori took Ernaldinni to the bier of their slain chieftain. Ernaldinni said she could lift their curse. Ernaldinni told them that they would no longer be doomed to wander the earth, for she was creating a new kingdom here in Dragon Pass, and they could be part of it. “It will not be magic that lifts this curse,” Ernaldinni said, “but talk of peace, which is its own kind of magic.” The Telmori were swayed by this prophecy, and agreed that they would come and talk peace, once they had chosen a new chieftain to replace Vraling Creekleaper. We sent Leikan with gifts to the Eagles. They were pleased with our generosity. We were raided by the Tusk Riders. We drove the Tusk Riders off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. 1383 The god-talkers heard metal ringing in the distance, but could not tell if it was bells or swords. We sent Minara with gifts to the Mule Deers. They were pleased with our generosity. The Telmori leader Kostajor Many-Whelps led a peace delegation to our clan hall. We offered them the chance to build a town. “We have no more use for a town than we would for pieces of the moon on a platter of gold,” Kostajor Many-Whelps said. We offered them a treasure. “A treasure is not enough to buy you peace,” Kostajor Many-Whelps said. We offered them cattle. “We will accept your tribute, and make peace,” Kostajor Many-Whelps said. The people of our tribe were overjoyed to hear of this peace, and the people of the Colymar and Malani tribes were glad that the Telmori war was finished. Shamans came to offer us vengeance against the Tusk Riders. We declined their offer. “How disappointed the spirits will be.” Leikan led a caravan to trade with the Namoldings. Aski, a warrior of the Vanstali clan, returned the young girl Renatha, who had run away from us, claiming to be an orphan, and seeking adoption into their clan. We told Renatha that our clan produced great warriors, also. The girl cried and wailed, and said that everyone knew that the Vanstali produced the greatest warriors in all of Dragon Pass. The stubborn child could not be moved from her opinions, and the people were greatly disconcerted. Leikan led a caravan to trade with the Namoldings. As Ironwall grew, the kings of the Aranwyth and Kheldon tribes squabbled over the right to demand gifts from its artisans and traders. We said to the kings, “None of us have the right to demand gifts from the townsfolk.” “This is a strange new law you propose,” they said. “For it is the king’s right to give gifts to his people. In order to exercise this right, he must be wealthy. What good is this town thing of yours if it does not make us wealthy?” They thought for a while more and then said, “The town is a new thing, so perhaps it does require new laws. You have done good things for us so far, so we will let you enact this law, and see if we are better off for it.” The motion rune on our magic banner glowed, so we knew we had done the right thing. Minara led a caravan to trade with the White Horses. Acting as our emissary, Leikan sought an alliance with the Turtles. They were pleased with the generous gifts we sent. Leikan said to them, “It would be generous of you to help us in a time of need.” Their chief, Randan, agreed that our two clans should be allies. “Generosity is the prerogative of chiefs and kings,” Randan said, “and I am glad to extend to you our bounty and protection.” A thane of the Mule Deer clan sought to hire our Humakti warriors as mercenaries; they wanted us to hurt the elders of the Gorind clan. We refused them. They were disappointed, but said that we were within our rights to refuse them. The harvest was poor. Horse-Spawn surrounded the town, warfare on their minds. Ernaldinni offered to marry the Horse-Spawn King. At first, the Horse-Spawn were angry. Then they laughed. Then something strange happened. Their grizzled elders spurred their horses to the middle of their formation, where their war leaders were. They consulted with the war leaders, who looked surprised and confused. Their parley lasted for a long time. Then their war leader spoke up, “It may be that there are certain prophecies. They make your strange offer acceptable, so we will not kill you now. In one season, send Ernaldinni and delegation to seek audience with our great king.” Then they rode off, their plans for war interrupted. Acting as our emissary, Leikan sought an alliance with the Red Foxes. They were pleased with the generous gifts we sent. Leikan said to them, “We are both blessed by the gods, and our alliance would please them further.” Their chief, Natalina, agreed that our two clans should be allies. “The favor of the gods is all well and good,” Natalina said, “but there are practical reasons for this alliance, and this is why I favor it.” We were raided by the Trolls. Salinarg met the trolls head-on, raining blow after blow upon any who dared face him. Our warriors took heart from seeing Salinarg fight so bravely. But after another skirmish, he collapsed We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Ernaldinni led a delegation to propose marriage to the Luminous Stallion King, ruler of the Horse-Spawn. Ernaldinni offered him gifts. The queen promised to stop calling his people “Horse-Spawn.” “From now on,” the Luminous Stallion King said, “you must call us what we call ourselves — Grazers.” Ernaldinni reminded him of the good things our clan had done for his people. The Luminous Stallion King thanked Ernaldinni for these generous acts, observing that other Orlanthi were not as worthy as she. Ernaldinni proposed marriage to him. The Luminous Stallion King said that he would sponsor a contest. In order to win the contest, Ernaldinni would have to pass three great tests of Earth. The tests would be chosen by Ferena Brooslayer, the high priestess of Maran Gor. The winner of the contest would marry him and become Queen of Dragon Pass. Ernaldinni would be one of several contestants. Ernaldinni agreed to these terms. Ernaldinni met the other contestants for the hand of the Luminous Stallion King. Ernaldinni gave them gifts. Thoreeta Spearstep and Arkilla said that Ernaldinni was a good and generous queen, and pledged a fair and friendly contest. Ernaldinni traveled to the Hidden Temple, where the crone priestess of Maran Gor demanded that she prove that she was worthy enough to learn of the three tests. Ernaldinni gave her a treasure. The crone was pleased with this generous gift, and said she would tell Ernaldinni what the tests were. “First,” said the crone, “you must tame a dragon. Then, you must win the favor of the Brass Man. Finally, you must be reborn as daughter of the mountain, and thereby win the blessing of the goddess Kero Fin.” We hosted the wedding banquet of Hindala and Baranthos. We gave blessings to the Namoldings. They blessed us in return. Our god-talkers told us that the Namoldings had given us much luck. 1384 The god-talkers identified no omens, and this troubled them. We got word that a dragon was laying waste to the steads of the Karandoli clan. Ernaldinni decided to tell the dragon that a new time had come. Alone, Ernaldinni went to the Karandoli tula, where the dragon soon appeared. Ernaldinni approached it, and it seemed surprised. The dragon reached for Ernaldinni and grabbed her in one of its great claws. Then it rubbed the queen up against its iridescent scales. The queen was alarmed at first, but the gesture seemed to be a friendly one. Then the dragon disappeared, as if it had been nothing more than a dream. Tonalang, Elmalandti, and Korlmhy caused trouble at the Karandoli market. The ring confiscated goods from them. They cursed and complained, but the punishment seemed to chasten them. A man of brass was seen walking about the footpaths of the Quivini Mountains. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that Ernaldinni would be in great danger, because the Brass Man would not be favorably disposed towards her. She should take many warriors, and give a treasure as a gift. We sent Ernaldinni with a treasure in hand. For many weeks the queen journeyed through the mountains, until she found the Brass Man. Ernaldinni offered the Tiger’s Eye Necklace to this man of brass, who raised his faceplate, revealing himself as a dwarf in brass armor. The dwarf unrolled a scroll which he kept at his belt, and squinted at it. “Favorable, very favorable. Good, materials, most useful, extra points assigned,” said the dwarf. “Very well, not shoot you.” The dwarf kept walking. Ernaldinni shouted after him, asking if she had gained his favor. “Yes, yes,” said the dwarf. “Not waste time! Schedule, schedule!” Thanes from the Brown Boar clan came to ask our Lhankor Mhy priests to magically translate an old scroll they had found. We said we would perform the resurrection, and would ask nothing in return. They praised our generosity. Our priests performed the necessary ritual, and discovered that the scroll contained instructions for the making of wine. The god-talkers said that it was time to become the daughter of Kero Fin. We conducted a divination The god-talkers said that the omens were good. They said that Ernaldinni should enter Kero Fin’s cave clothed, and then leave it naked, taking a new name, so it would be as if she had been born anew. Ernaldinni presided over a sacrifice to Kero Fin. The god-talkers said that the signs were good; Kero Fin had received our sacrifice. Ernaldinni traveled to the mountain and found a cave there. Ernaldinni entered the cave clothed and came out again naked. She said her name was now Brenna. The mountain shook, and Brenna knew that she had become the daughter of Kero Fin, granting her sovereignty over Dragon Pass. As she exited the caves, she saw the ghosts of all of her clan’s dead carls gathered below. The ghosts cheered for her, heralding this great turning point in the history of Dragon Pass. Brenna approached the Luminous Stallion King to tell him she had passed the earth tests. Brenna said, “I have passed the tests you set for me.” “I know,” he said. “The wedding will commence when Earth season next begins.” Women from the Turtle clan came to urge us to help them prosecute a feud against the Vanstali. We offered to make peace between the feuding clans. The women seemed offended. “Make peace with those detestable rodents? Don’t suggest such a thing, even in jest!” We refused them. They were unhappy, and said they would have to reconsider their friendship with us. The harvest was plentiful. The other clans in the tribe enjoyed harvests as good as ours, or better. We were raided by the Trolls. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. Humakti warriors sought our help in a war party against walking corpses. We sent warriors to fight alongside them. They said we were honorable, and then departed with our warriors in tow. 1385 Trading wasn’t expected to be as profitable this year. The Tusk Riders raided us. We were driven from the battlefield and looted. Many of our sheep became sick. We sacrificed to Nevala, the sheep mother. A quarter of the sick sheep were healed by Nevala’s grace. The rest died mercifully quickly. Hendrick spoke for the warriors when he said that they were stretched too thin, and that more fighters were needed. Brenna composed an inspirational poem to strengthen their morale. Brenna married the Luminous Stallion King and became Queen of Dragon Pass. The king of the dragonewts told her, “You have taken pieces of old things, and made them into new and powerful things. You made things better by turning them into their opposites. You stopped a war by turning it into stones and mortar. You made peace by conjuring a wolf. You found ancient secrets of the earth, and now use them to make another new thing, joining together the people of cows and storm with the people of horses and sun.” This was the first day of a great new kingdom, a kingdom that will one day take Brenna’s name. It will one day enter a desperate struggle with a great empire, and its last queen will forever change the face of the world. All of this will be possible because of the courage and forethought of the Doe clan, of the Maboder tribe, who came to Dragon Pass when it was wild, and remade it in their own image.
